| Luka Magnotta, as the master of disguise might look now |
A few things: while the video shows Magnotta joyfully dismembering the body of his victim, including with a a knife and fork, and a little dog licking at it, the very idea of dismembering a murder victim isn't all that rare and has an element of pragmatism, as moving a body stealthily requires it to be done in many pieces. The fact that it was done in such a sickening way is obviously very disturbing but the human butchering is, sadly, not that uncommon. In fact had the killer had put out the trash on time, it might have gone undetected.
Secondly, murders of gays also made the news a lot several years ago, as the pattern seems to be that the perpetrator is frequently conflicted about his sexuality, or is pissed off at having to prostitute for cash, leading him to sometimes lash out violently.
Thirdly, the reasons Magnotta moved to Montreal have never really been explained, but it's not the first time a killer (Magnotta being an alleged killer now) came here and suddenly acted out his awful deeds. Christenson from Pennsylvania, Boden from Hamilton are some other examples, so perhaps the city's reputation as a party-town, Canada's Tijuana or Vegas makes it attractive for certain types.
And while the media seems to be going nuts for this story, there has surprisingly been very little input from the gay community itself. I haven't seen much reporting from the streets in the Gay Village.
The one conversation I had with a restauranteur in the area resulted in him telling me that Magnotta came into his pizza joint a few times alone.
Magnotta always seemed serious, dolled up in very tight sexy pants. He resisted attempts at chit chat while waiting for his order but he apparently did not seem like a wild-eyed psychopath either, according to the restauranteur.
The restauranteur had the impression that Magnotta was working at the nearby Taboo Bar, which features male stripper. I asked how he knew that, he said that the traffic at those times were people from that club and that it's possible Magnotta was simply going to the bar but he somehow had the impression that Magnotta was working, not playing.
So yeah, Magnotta was most likely in town working as a male stripper just off the main strip of the Gay Village, which has some pretty rough spots, this bar seemingly like one of them.

In the mean time, it seems many gays are moving away from the city, because it's sometimes too expensive.
ReplyDeleteIt can cost an arm and a leg to live here, or a hand and a foot, anyways.
