Another old-time restaurant closes

The Piemontais, which recently made the Coolopolis list of Montreal's oldest restaurants, has shut its doors for good at the corner of Dorch and Debullion after 35 years in biz.
Owner Remo Pompeo was forced to move because his lease ended and the commercial landlord did not sign another lease with him.
The restaurant was the site of a dinner shared by Rene Levsque, Pierre Trudeau and labour leader Michel Chartrand.
It got enthusiastic reviews from the local newspaper food columnist and otherwise kept a low profile, although it was once forced into court for unlawful dismissal after firing a dishwasher with 12 years experience after a chef gave the boss a him-or-me ultimatum. Not sure what the final decision was on that case.

Damn, I practically grew up at that place. At times eating there several nights a week. It is the standard to which I base every Italian meal I ever have. I have known several of the owners of that building and even tried to buy it myself about 10 years ago.

Remo has been wanting to retire for years, I am a little surprised that he is still there since he was supposed to pass the reigns on to the maitre'd years ago. He probably just used the lease expiring as an excuse to do just that.

What did the decision decide: that there is a short "prescription" period (statute of limitations for you common-law folk) which means that there is a limited period in which the complaint can be filed.

After examining the facts, the Labour Board agreed that he had been fired at an earlier rather than a later date, and therefore the complaint was too late. It is not a decision on the merits; for that, the plaintiff would have had to file his complaint within the required time limit.
