Hartland Monahan. Great name eh? Someone named Sylvain Lepine has driven the rink renaming initiative issue to the foreback of Laval politics, as his facebook group has about 150 people supporting his initiative based on the fact that Monahan was a helluva guy when he was in high school before leaving for good long ago.
Hartland wasn't a particularly good hockey player though, possibly because his gentlemanly name might have held him back. The journeyman forward schlepped around a bunch of teams in his career before settling down in Atlanta.
The only notable thing about Monahan really, other than his healthy hair, was the fact that he married Bernie Geoffion's daughter and that his son briefly made the major leagues of baseball, although many of his son's former Seattle teammates shun him because he apparently ratted out their steroid use.
Renaming a rink after Monahan might be crazy but it's not as farfetched as all that, the Prefontaine arena a few blocks up from badass Prefontaine and Ste. Catherine was recently named for journeyman defenseman Francis Bouillon, who is technically black (although you sorta couldn't tell, yay black people) and even more technically, from New York City.

Unlike Mike Bossy, he never abused his fiduciary responsibility as a director to render valueless the life savings of seniors from Mount Real and iForum, thus is more deserving of an arena being named for him.
ReplyDeleteMonahan would also be the uncle of Blake Geoffrion, no? I wrote about that hockey dynasty a bit here.
ReplyDeleteAlso I wonder if this guy wasn't named in honour of Hartland Molson. It's not a very common given name.
Also, Francis Bouillon was born of a Quebecoise mother and a Haitian father in NY. Mom later moved back to Mtl and the young Bouillon played his minor hockey in the rink that now bears his name. I believe he also kicked in a substantial sum to spruce the place up.
