Somewhere around 1913 came "The Westmount" at 4168 Sherbrooke W (corner Greene). Oddly enough, Lovell's shows it as having 3 apartments in 1913 to about 1919 when it then jumped to 4, then a few years later, back down to 3. I lived there in the 80s, and can assure you there are only 3 apts.

    Riveting stuff, I know.

Nothing is says class, though, like "Le Jordache" in Chateauguay. I believe "Le Sergio Valente" is across the street.

Is there a conversion guide somewhere which easily advises as to what the pre 1920s numbers place themselves today?

  4. Nope. The new and old civic numbers are helter skelter. Best thing you can do is check the address in the Lovell guide. There you'll find the nearest cross street.

    Aloha Kristian

    How are you?

What is happening to old street names?

I can't make anything of the current street names in Montreal. This article made me think of the huge old apartment complex I lived next to on Sherbrooke St. It was a magnificent old complex that reminded me of the apartment complex of "Rosemary's Baby", which was current at the time about 40 years ago. Is it still there and what happen to the street names? Google has no notion of Ontario St. near that location

While at McGill I lived in a basement apartment of an old mansion one back from a Presbyterian church on Sherbrooke across the street from the Museum of Fine Arts on Ontario St. During the Vietnam War we use to demonstrate in front of the American Consulate on Ontario above a street now called Avenue Docteur-Penfield. What was the name of Doctor Penfield's street 40 years ago? I bet he never used the French spelling of Doctor.

After staring to read your Blog I finally figured out that Dorchester St. was no more. Thanks for using historical names that I can relate to.

BTW: The Presbyterian Church used to do a tasty “ Handle’s Messiah” with full orchestra and chorus every Easter. It was a wonderful time and place to live.

Pine Avenue is the street above Dr. Penfield, whose former name is McGregor. Pine has been Pine (Av. Des Pins) since my mother was a child growing up in the now McGill ghetto.

I think you are mistaken about Ontario St.- it's nowhere near that neighborhood and I don't think it ever was. Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone.

Yes I admit I am mistaken. However I think the street name I am looking for is presently called "Avenue Du Musee" In the sixties it was called something else. Does anyone know what that was?

BTW. Thanx McGregor was the other street name I was trying to remember.

  8. Les rues de Montréal says that du Musée used to be called Ontario Avenue, quite distinct from Ontario Street but I suppose the duplication was one reason it got renamed in 1975.

  9. I live in what used to be the Kent Apartments, on Hutchison. According to Lowell's Montreal Street directory, number 1735 Hutchison was a private residence; it was not part of the Kent Apartments, which are listed as 1737, 1741 and 1745 Hutchison. These are listed for the first time in 1909, and not listed in 1908.

The street numbers (1737-1745) are misleading to the modern eye; these apartments are not far south of Sherbrooke, but are in the area known as "The Annex", just south of St. Josef. The street numbers were changed to their modern values (4837-4845) between 1927 and 1928.

Also, the "Kent Apartments" names were changed in 1932 to:

    4837 Hutchison: Regent Apartments
    4841 Hutchison: Rialto Apartments
    4845 Hutchison: Rivoli Apartments

In 1939, the apartment names were all three became "Rialto Apartments".

Between 1974 and 1999, the three buildings variously do and do not have a name listed; but, when they do, the name is "Realto Apartments". Sometime after 1999, the buildings dropped their names.
