Tanya Buschman's sad death

Gilles Berube, left, was convicted of killing his wife
Tanya Buschman in 2005. He claimed she had hung herself
at home on Nov. 20, 2002.
This home at 231 Cypihot in Ste Anne's, now owned by the local golf shop guy, was the spot where Tanya Buschman, 35, was murdered by her husband Gilles Berube on Nov. 20, 2002.
He rushed her to the Lakeshore Hospital with a metal clothesline still coiled around her neck, which he said she had used to hang herself in the stairwell.
Hospital authorities found his story a bit inconsistent so they phoned police. They questioned him thoroughly and only released him the next evening, waiting for more evidence.
Forensic Pathologist Michelle Houde declared the death to be murder by hanging but the defense vigorously denied that claim.
Houde conceded that it was possibly a suicide but other injuries such as bruises on the body, as well as other internal injuries and marks on the scalp suggest she had been violented.
Friends and family said that the husband might have been upset because Buschman had told Berube that she was planning to leave him. She had been seeing another man for about three weeks, his name was Robert Manago and the two were said to be in love.
Berube maintained his innocence and - in the same way many witnesses testified that Buschman would never have killed herself - they testified that he could never be a murderer.
He was seen as a kindly person who had overcome many challenges in his life, including the suicide of his father.
His defense attorneys had focused on Buschman's various neuroses - she had recently had some sort of plastic surgery that she was unhappy with - as possible motives for suicide.
Berurbe was found guilty of first degree murder on March 4, 2005. His appeal attempt also failed.

Sad to have to see this story again, which makes one feel different than seeing the other reports of murder & crime. I was close to her for a while in my last year of high school but gradually lost contact in the years after. Still have her hand written letters in a box somewhere and her laugh, smile and voice in my memory.

  5. Just watched the FATAL VOWS episode on this tragic case. It made her look like a felicitous user of men - casting them out - always looking for a 'step up'- backed up by her airhead man-hating 'friends'. I would hope that this was not the case.

    1. What difference would that make? She still didn't deserve to be murdered! I find the way they portrayed her despicable victim blaming. Whatever she did wrong, she doesn't deserve to be dead and for her story to be over. Who knows what good she might have done had she lived another 60 years.

He didn't get anything out of murdering his wife and in the end is basically paying with his own life. Most spouse killers follow that same path. They pretty much always get caught.

  6. I worked with Michel back when they first met. I remember her coming to the club with her ex at the time and making moves on Michel. All the sudden she wanted nothing to do with her ex and wanted to be with Michel. I had warned Michel not to trust that kind of woman many times but he fell for her too hard. I hope Michel did not commit this act as a result of all this, I always knew him as a very kind easy going guy but who knows. Very Tragic.

  8. People get mad over somebody saying something negative about the deceased, this is the problem with the world, we are not Jesus people, we are not perfect, the truth is the truth, we are taught to get pissed when somebody tells us the truth about ourselves, it's really disgusting, that we think we're so perfect

  9. Ironic that authorities believe he faked her suicide and the article above said his father committed suicide.

  10. This world is certainly in big trouble. It would help if we all could only put ourselves in the shoes of others just before we have that urge to criticize. When we point the fingers, or verbally beat up on one another,we're only proving that we're all guilty of our own imperfections. This is such a sad story because it's about something everyone deals with but in so many different ways. It's just too bad that we have yet to learn how to to live and let live. smh

  11. He was the person w/the problem plain n simple. He resisted her sexually, went out late at night GOD knows where? He needed therapy from his mom's death from cancer & his dad's suicide that followed. He emulated his dad only he killed her instead of himself. Mental illness was already there - the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. She was happy & upbeat, he a brooder! TRUE Love does NOT kill.
