Rock'n'roll royalty has been living in the Kweeb for the last five years without me knowing a thing about it. Scottish-born singer Midge Ure, who fronted the band Ultravox (Dancing with Tears in my Eyes, Vienna) bought a fancy cottage in the Laurentians near Tremblant in 2007, where three of his four daughters are living with him and attending school in French.
In one interview he said that the move was part of a strategy to get himself to drink less booze. He is also likely dabbling in a bit of property speculation up there too, so more power to him.
One British newspaper reported that he ditched this place after a year but he is indeed very much still here, as my friend Christine Long interviewed him a few days ago about his new record, done in his home studio.
Of course Ure is possibly best-known for co-penning "Do They Know It's Christmastime," the anthem that brought a lot of cash into starving Africa. We at Coolopolis would like him to do a benefit concert and-or record about something close to home now. Maybe he could organize The Concert Against Corruption. How's that one sound?

Such a cool name Midge Ure, even given its associations. Always recall my friend, a lovely, blonde curly-haired Welsh girl, who could hardly get through any outdoor game unmolested by a cloud of no-see-ums in the U.K. Such was the vein of masochism in this elitist school one could be eaten alive by midges as the game of Fielders went on merrily around you. While many folks (I cop) got verrily merrily sick of the sound of "Don't you know.....", end of day, egos aside, it praps did some good. Ure can certainly pen a new one for us here. Corruption's almost the basic lead-up. Throw in doses of ignorance, pure greed, and arrogance.
ReplyDeleteCause, way we're headed, feast it will not be. Just find a good tax shelter 1st Midge, then make sure that the proceeds, tax-free, are directed to Quebecers Quell Qorruption (QQQ)! Ha.
I did jest about the Q.Q.Q., but does get harder to find humour in all of the mendacity that is now being revealed. Thank you so much for allowing me to hogg your blog of late-I must restrain me!
ReplyDeleteYour posts touch on many resonant things. Although a "landed immigrant" Shelley Long ago, quotas & detailed background checks were required back then for us. Could write a novel on the positive image that Canada/Quebec held in Europe. Unlike Malavoy, I made sure to get citizenship, have always voted, and am fluently bilingual. Despite myself. Having lived around the globe due to the Father's job, I've experienced some nastiness with language/cultural issues before.
Nuff whinging-so many worthy long-time contributors here. BTW-if I've not answered any photo Q's, it's as pix are hard to see on cellphone. Arm broken-cannot get to P.C. Don't even know my "URL".
See- they shouldn't have let me in!
Christine Long, puleez. What came over me. Shelley's a pain!
ReplyDeleteI have a song title suggestion: "Do They Know Their Roads Aren't Paved at All?"
