City planners for the southern section of NDG might be on the verge of screwing up, yet again, this time by taking a good idea to create a green space but possibly at the expense of an important highway entrance below. The northeast corner of Girouard and Upper Lachine, currently off-limits as a highway entrance, is slated to become a 15,000 square foot green space. That is good news because the area needs more green space and it'll be a great place to transplant those basketball courts that were mistakenly put into Oxford Park. It could also be a useful lesson in how to start covering sections of the Decarie Expressway, a project dear to my heart.
However it occurred to me that the city planners might simply go the lazy route and not build an elevated platform above the road access below, but simply remove forever the entranceway to Highway 15 south that sits beneath.
That highway entrance has been closed for some time now because the access has become too difficult with the opening of Girouard northbound.
The result is that west end motorists trying to get onto the 15 south or 40 west have ended up jamming other roads, such as St. James St. West (St. Jacques) and the streets around Decarie and Cote St. Luc.
This handy highway entrance needs to be rehabilitated rather than demolished and that could be done by offering access from de Maisonneuve, which is already slated to become a two-way street before long.
The highway entrance could be easily reopened by demolishing a couple of the small houses on the route (see illustration).
I left a message with a city planner of the borough of NDG to ask if they plan to forever close that useful entrance but so far no callback.

I think the residents of those houses will fight tooth and nail to stay.
ReplyDeleteIsn't the provincial government funding this also? If so, they may beg off, since their priorities have switched to language and culture. :-(
