Threat to life...

Can you spot the threat to life in this photo? No, we don't mean the cigarette smoking wall supporter. Those leaves growing from the trunk of that tree will kill the poor thing if allowed to grow. The city is home to thousands such trees. If you're standing next to one at a red light, pull off the leaves on the trunk and it'll thank you by thriving for years.

What is that plant called that will eventually suffocate the tree? Can I plant some near those cottonwoods and slowly kill those off? Man I hate those trees. They make gardening a nightmare.

  2. The suckers are just branches sprouting out inappropriately. An expert tells me they're not all that dangerous after all, but on an older tree they can be a problem.

Montreal plants 5,000 trees a year, they die after four or so years on average because the space underground is too small and they don't get enough water.

Those trees are - I think - lindens. Someone told me they're gingkos but I'm pretty sure that's wrong.

Too leafy to be gingko and wrong leaf shape and colour for linden. Probably the somewhat overplanted locust tree.
