Gary Murr has been looking for years for a photo of a store called International Firearms that opened on Bleury in 1952.
It's for a book he's working on about the early years of the Cold War. Apparently the owner of that gun shop on Bleury, William Sucher, had quite a significant legacy. The shop was best known for getting knocked over quite often, including by members of the FLQ. After one such theft he casually pointed out that crime sprees usually ensue soon after. Another time he refused to show his paperwork to officials.
Sucher would eventually die relatively young of heart attack in 1976 but his partner, Manny Weigensberg kept it going and turned it into Century Arms in Boca Raton Florida, which was involved in the Iran-Contra Affair. And if that's not conspiracy theory fodder enough, one of the store's employees, Alfred Pinisch, was accidentally killed by cops in a robbery, but only after he had testified at the Kennedy assassination hearings. So those who write about MKULTRA and so forth might have something to work with there.
Montrealers spent $268 a year on lotteries. The provincial average is $325. Rural areas tend to buy more, for example North Shore residents spend $408 per head. It gives out about half of the $1.8 billion it receives in prizes Seriously, stop buying lotto tickets.

Fernand Leblanc got run out of Verdun in 1980 for opening the Cafe Club, a small restaurant which featured nude male waiters, at 525 Second Ave.

In 1964 two boys, aged 12 and 15, tortured a 19-year-old waitress in St. Michel and wrote "FLQ" in her own blood on her belly. Their identities were never revealed but it would be interesting to know who they were and whether they became separatist terrorists.

Come on Kristian, 2 angry teens writing FLQ is similar to me putting anarchy signs on my school books during my teen phase...they probably didn't even know what that meant. They could be hardcore rightwingers federalists, who knows. What's disturbing me is that such an ugly crime gets a tiny column 4 paragraphs in the Windsor paper. Was it big news in Montreal media back then?
ReplyDeleteThanks a valid point, but keep in mind that the FLQ was only on the radar for less than a year at that point, and had only made the news with three or four incidents.
ReplyDeletethe outfit is dorky for the bank, but nothing is worse than wearing golf shirts.
ReplyDeleteOh come on ! The rapists were 12 and 15 years old, that's hardly recruitment age for violent followers, and the crime has no alignment whatsoever with the cause. It's only two sad kids high on hormones and low on self-responsibility who did something inexcusable, then tried to pin it on somebody else in a futile attempt at deflection.
