Steven Cojocaru grew up near Cavendish Mall, the son of Romanian imigrants. He graduated Wagar High School in 1979 and wrote the Flare was There column before hooking up with Joan Rivers who helped his TV fashion critic career along. But unlike other ex-Montrealers, Cojocaru never misses a chance to badmouth his hometown, which he has described repeatedly in negative terms. "Rainy Montreal," "Nowhere, Canada."
Unlike Christopher Plummer who used to come back home to photograph vintage architecture or Leonard Cohen who still has a humble house here, Cojocaru, (seen at left entering a Jennifer-Aniston lookalike contest), now says he was bullied as a kid, so his class of '79, (ie: Susie Caplan, Susie Raduenz, Henry Stupp, Carolyn Nassi, Sylvia Lerman, Lionel Goodfield, Allan Grossman, Peter Loomer, Jim Smith, Mitch Borrow, Dennie Theodore, Steven Mestel, Sylvie Cohen, David Berman, Neal Kirsch, Ian Kimel, Aaron Rosenblatt, et al). doesn't look good at all.
Compare this to Ryan Gosling, (an honourary Montrealer, having been raised 90 minutes west of Peel and Ste Catherine) who was bullied so badly in his hometown of Cornwall Ontario that his mom pulled him out of school to get home schooled, and yet not only did Gosling not dwell on his pain, Gosling even made a glowing TV report about Cornwall. Anyway, Cojocaru's annoying rating has now hit 82%.

Embarrassing to think he is from our part of the city.
ReplyDeletehe's annoying anyways, and frankly, none too bright or interesting. Just because you're flamboyantly gay, does not necessarily mean you're going to be funny, witty or interesting.
ReplyDeleteWho is Steven Cojocaru?
ReplyDeleteUgh, had no idea he was from Montreal. This guy single handedly got me to quit watching the Today show after being a regular viewer pretty much all my life.
ReplyDeleteJanina Stronski (Jenny Jones Talk Show)lived on Harvard Avenue, NDG and went to St. Monica's in 1956.
ReplyDeleteHow easy it is to bad-mouth a place where you didn't succeed and then to use the place you relocated to as a springboard of such badmouthing--a kind of a "sour grapes" attitude. Hey, don't go away mad--just go away!
ReplyDeleteI always hear of some media person, formerly of Montreal and now self-exiled to some lesser place putting our city down in some way. I even got the impression that Bill Shatner in his early years wasn't comfortable with admitting he was a Montrealer. So glad to see how more positive he is today, though.
I can fully understand how local singers and musicians would hold a grudge since for years there really wasn't much in the way of music industry support for local talent (witness the fiasco with the defunct Sugar Jones girl group), but Montreal ain't Hollywood or New York and never will be.
And who was that Canadian tennis tournament bum of the 1990s who never quite made it big and always played down the fact he was from Montreal? Yeah, who WAS that whatsisname, anyway?
That was Greg Ruzedski from Pte-Claire, at least I think that is of whom you speak, played as a Brit and was a bit of a flake, loved complaining, big serve but little else.
