Chinese dispute closes restaurant

A complicated legal battle between two rival Chinese nationalist factions has led to a longstanding dispute over the ownership of this building at 1095 Clark and, alas, the closing of a beloved Montreal Chinese eatery.
One faction calling itself the Kuomintang went against another considering itself to be the same thing.
More precisely it was a battle between the 77th Executive Committee of the Montreal Chinese Nationalist League and Charles Ho and the Chinese National League of Canada against Chack Sang Lee.
The buiding has belonged to the Kuomintang since 1944 and the dispute started as early as 2001 when one vote was not deemed valid and the whole thing went haywire.
I'd have to read the judgement a couple of times (linked to above) to figure out who won or who sounds right.
The upshot of this, however, is that the Van Roy restaurant, seen here in this image, was closed and shuttered in November 2010. It was around since at least 1976 and was considered a local Chinese food landmark. I'm told that the building administrators tried to up the rent and these guys didn't bite.

  1. Wow, would be interesting to hear a translation of their meetings, 60 years after their war. Reminded me of the cuban exiles in Florida.
