What did McGill do to Leonard Cohen's brain?

Leonard Cohen was 17 when he agreed to participate in psychological experiments at McGill in 1951, conducted by Donald Hebb, according to research by author Ann Diamond.
Unlike others, Cohen is said to have enjoyed the sensory deprivation experience and participated frequently and that's what he's seen here doing.
Removing stimulation can have "serious effects on the physiology of the brain," as Hebb conceded in an interview 20 years later. Hundreds signed on to the experiment, which paid an impressive $20 a day, a good sum at the time. Only 72 of them stayed long enough to provide useful information. And of those 72, only six did it for the full six days. We don't know if Cohen was one of those six, but based on his apparent subsequent comments, it seems quite likely that he spent considerable time doing it. .
Leonard's subsequent bout with profound depression is well documented, as his is quest for truth through spirituality and of course his fantastic success in music and poetry.
Living in the early 50s, without TV, internet, must have given people some solid training in sensory deprivation but the experiments were undoubtedly dangerous and it would be interesting to get a follow up on the subjects and the long term effects they had.
Diamond, who idolized Cohen as a teen, later became his neighbour and had a turbulent relationship with him and his entourage, as discussed in this brilliant post from her site. She muses whether Cohen was part of a lifelong mind-control MKULTRA experiment conducted at McGill later famously under the guise of Dr. Ewan Cameron.

  3. I cheated, but I guess your tip (the picture's tag) was intended? In any event, it's quite an interesting story :) http://lunamoth1.blogspot.ca/2011/09/man-in-photo-taken-at-mcgill-university.html

  4. I just read Ann Diamond's story you linked to. "Brilliant," you say, pretty fucking whacked out, sez me.

  5. I just read the blog post you referenced, and I tend to agree that it's whacked out. This paragraph screams kook:

"Mind controlled entertainers and public figures -- and this also applies to certain mind-controlled politicians, like Pierre Trudeau, a friend of Cohens -- require handlers to help them manage situations caused by their having various alters that don't all work together. These handlers, e.g. Kris Kristofferson, who likely was Janis Joplin's programmer -- are there to coordinate and conceal the fact that these public figures are "programmed multiples."

  7. Hi K.
Thanks for referencing my article. I agree, it all sounds pretty whacked out, unless you've experienced the effects up close, or taken a serious look at the growing literature MKULTRA mind control, which has had a huge though unacknowledged impact on Montreal. If, for example, Pierre Trudeau actually was a Jesuit-programmed pedophile, as has been alleged by a quite a few people, then his actions during the October Crisis, take on a whole other meaning.

Recently I came across photos of our hero taken in 1960 and apparently published in LIFE magazine. They show an "artists' colony" flourishing on the island of Hydra, with the newly arrived Leonard Cohen featured prominently. The trouble is, he hadn't written any of his famous songs yet,and the photos appear suspiciously posed. You might almost jump to the conclusion that CIA-controlled LIFE magazine wanted people to think there was an exciting colony of artists living on Hydra, which has long been a haven for intelligence operatives of all kinds...

A subject for another blog, I guess.

  8. Oh, and note the collegiate tie ... whether performing under a tree on Hydra for LIFE magazine, or sweating in sensory isolation, our Leonard was always well-dressed

  9. Janis Joplin liked alcohol, heroin and speed in her early days. I think that knocks her out of the the story, which then kind of kicks the table out of the rest of the story.

  10. Janis Joplin is only a bystander/victim in this story, Michael. Kris Kristofferson, though, is a serious player. Military intelligence (Air Force) background, reputation as a mind control programmer. Quite likely he was Janis' handler.

Totally by chance, in 1987 I sat next to Kristofferson in the L.A. airport. Those were Ronald Reagan days, Contra days. He was leafing through a copy of SOLDIER OF FORTUNE magazine, and chatting with a friend about his recent trip to Nicaragua where he had a girlfriend. I found him so repulsive, I actually picked up my bags and moved to the opposite side of the departures lounge. the following year he released an album called NICARAGUA which was, apparently, sympathetic to the Sandinistas. I suspect he's an agent as are many people in the C&W industry and music business in general.

When KK plays concerts in Ottawa, he meets with cult contacts from at least as far away as Montreal.

I was at a Kris Kristofferson concert a few years ago at the Ottawa Folk Festival and noticed about 5,000 people in the audience who, as if on cue, simultaneously banged their hands together after every song and then stood en masse at the end of the concert and continued banging their hands together while yelling something like, "MORE!" I don't know how he did it, but he was certainly in mind control of those 5,000 people for that hour or so.

  12. Leonard Cohen's fans meet together every year to share their feelings about the idol they have never met, but feel they know very intimately.

When I sat next to KK at LAX in 1987, he was talking about two women he was going to see, one in Managua and one in Mazatlan. He had bought them some perfume in the Duty Free shop. Interestingly, he is said by many to be involved in drug running and human trafficking, including Reagan's Contras, who ran a lot of operations out of LAX that year.
