Campbell Ashton knocked over countless banks and other commercial establishments, in fact the guy knocked over the same bank three times in a single day once in the 60s.
He was finally shot dead by police constable Yves Frechette at a robbery in Rosemount on Thursday January 3, 1962, one of several gun battles between police and thieves during that week.
Ashton had $100,000 from his past robberies, so he wasn't doing it because he needed the money.
In 1969 Ashton's son James Ashton, then 20, was also arrested for 17 armed robberies while on parole, he was sentenced to seven years for his crimes.
This might lead you to think that Ashtons have a bank-robber gene, but Stuart Ashton, his nephew, is a straight-shooting friend of Coolopolis who has frequently wondered what got into his uncle, whom he only knew through an old Super 8 silent movie he has of the guy.
In fact Stuart Ashton is one of the city's highest-regarded publicans, tending lovingly the excellent McLean's Pub near Peel and St. Cat, which is holding a very cool event Oct. 4.
Stuart believes that his uncle Campbell was just hooked on the bank robbery pastime.
Campbell Ashton's addiction to bank robbing thrills has inspired me to set up a paintball bank robbery simulation thing for people who want to experience the joys of knocking over a bank. Investors can contact me.
haha, nice plug for the party, you caught my curiosity (may or may not attend, lol)
