Montreal to change forever on Dec. 11

After
decades of discussions, Montreal will finally get a beltway in a few weeks, as Highway 30 creates a ring of roads that keeps traffic off the island.
This will have many good effects for the city and it will also further propel the West Island forward as a desirable place to live or own.
The Dec. 11 or 12 opening -- just 74 days away - is said to be on schedule and will even include a throwback toll booth at the bridge over the St. Lawrence.
They're hiring!
All motor transport using highways 20 or 40 should benefit from seeing less traffic as trucks travelling from Ontario past the city, or visa-versa will no longer have to clog up our city's roads.
Chateauguay will benefit from this as well, because the long lines to the Mercier bridge should be somewhat alleviated as the new route will funnel southbound traffic via Perot Island.
Cities tend to grow and prosper in a westerly fashion and this should support that trend, as Vaudreuil and the area around it will become far more accessible.

  1. a new bridge over St-Laurence river without a sidewalk or bike path is a pretty serious omission in my opinion.

It's not like there are a lot of bridges over the st-laurence to start with, and to build a new bridge without including a sidewalk/bike path for active transport and recreation needs is pure stupidity.

The Mercier bridge's rebuilding includes an expanded bike sidewalk.

    Thanks Transport Quebec!

    Thanks useless PPP project!

  2. Whaaat??? I knew this was being talked about but I didn't realize it was so close to happening. I thought it was years away from even being agreed to!

Wow, this is really great news. It's so ridiculous to send transport traffic across the bridges and onto the island just so they can drive west and leave again. Finally!

  4. Blame the delay for Autoroute 30's completion squarely on the shoulders of some south shore property owners who dragged negotiations on for far too long.

Who wants to bet that the original stated cost of completion was way less than what it turned out to be.

In China, the bulldozers just show up one day and start bulldozing...LOL!

With that bypass, there is no longer any need for an expanded Turcot interchange!
