Deedjooknow that Scotty Bowman actually scored a goal against Montreal?
In fact not only did Scotty Bowman score a goal against our team, but it was the first-ever penalty shot goal ever scored in the NHL.
So once you click on the link you're all like.. oh, not that Scotty Bowman.. and not that St. Louis.. and not that Montreal.
Just in case you're too lazy or the link ain't work, the story is that St. Louis Eagles forward Ralph Bowman was generally known as Scotty Bowman. The defenceman was from Manitoba and was not related to his later Habs namesake. The St. Louis team he was playing for was actually Ottawa, which relocated there for one season in 1934-35 but then folded due to expensive travel costs. So this was the first NHL game played in St. Louis too.
He scored against the Montreal team on Nov. 13, 1934. But it was not the Canadiens, it was the Montreal Maroons. His goal was scored on a 38-foot wrister, glove side. It was the first penalty shot goal but the second penalty shot attempt, as the Habs were involved in an earlier try.
What ex-Montreal Canadien was the one in junior hockey who high sticked (putting it mildly - from someone I met who played in the game) and ended Scotty Bowman's hockey playing career ?
ReplyDeleteGreat trivia question, alas it's big on his wikipedia page. Seems Bowman didn't hold a grudge, as a young scout in 1962 he gave Talbot a top rating.
ReplyDeleteWhen Bowman was coach of The St Louis Blues - He brought Jean Guy Talbot in to play for The Blues so no apparent grudge on either side....
