Decarie Blvd.: people getting killed there

We've previously noted that people tend to get killed a lot on Decarie Boulevard.
A peek through the crime press in a six month period in 1978 indicates that this was also the case back then as well.
Terrence Grow and Marie Faulkner
Marie Faulkner, 21, of 4201 Decarie apt. 2 (just south of Monkland) was killed on Saturday 21 January 1978 by her boyfriend Terrence Grow, 24.who attempted to kill himself afterwards. Mom hadn't heard from her daughter that night so she called cops and they bust in to find Terrence apparently sleeping on the couch. She was a francophone and he was an anglo, and he apparently got pissed off because she didn't want him to come on a visit with certain French friends. When she returned from her outing, he strangled her and tried to kill himself but we don't know by what means. The two had been living in Vancouver prior to that but had returned in October 1977.

Heather Zematis, killed at work
Old Chalet BBQ at 6825 Decarie
Heather Zematis, 22, was killed on Wednesday morning February 7, 1978 at 12:15 a.m. while working as cashier at a now-defunct branch of Chalet BBQ at 6825 Decarie. She had been working there for five years while doing her
psychology degree at Concordia (ie: Sire George Williams University). Zematis had always told her colleagues that she would never resist an armed robbery but apparently the cash register was rigged to make a crazy noise if you hit a wrong button and apparently she might have done just that when the two hooded black men, wearing gloves yelled "don't move." They shot her in the head and left her for dead after taking the $800 in the register. Zematis, who lived with her parents on Airlie in LaSalle was well-loved by everybody who knew her. The staff at the Jewish General was unable to save her.

John Court Lund, beaten to death
On Wednesday March 22, 1978 John Court Lund, 44, was found beaten to death at his home in the high-rise at 5311 Sherbrooke W, apt. 407, corner Decarie. The Dane had moved to Montreal 20 years earlier and worked at the Shell refinery in the east end. He was found naked in a pool of blood at 2 p.m. that day after missing work without advising anybody. Lund lived alone with his cat, rarely entertained and didn't drink. His only regular visitor was his mom. The janitor said he didn't think Lund, who was outgoing and kind, was gay. So police ruled out a homosexual crime of passion and attributed the killing to theft. A 16-year-old boy was later arrested, so it appears to have started with sex.

The apartment you show for the last story is 5311 Sherbrooke St. West, I lived there a few years back.

  2. that building always seems to have fires or fire alarms going off. Also there's a pool on the top floor which is apparently really gross.

  3. No need to pick on Decarie, though. How about other neighbourhoods like Park Ex?

Kristian, since you seem to have great sources of past Montreal crimes, how would I go about tracking down the exact day and the details of the violent death of a student whom I knew as an acquaintance in high school?

From what I was told at the time, that student was involved in a bad drug deal gone wrong and ended up being strangled sometime during the latter part of 1969 or the early part of 1970. Furthermore, I have no idea if the perpetrators were caught, although I presume (and hope) that they were.

Those "find a grave" websites have been no help, and the prospect of having to wade through page after page of newspaper archives for what would likely be small paragraph or two easily missed is clearly not the ideal approach.

If you like, I could email you the victim's name and address.

    Thanks.
