1849 Ste. Catherine W.

1849-1853 St. Catherine W. No idea what the spiffy-looking white building to the east might be.

  1. OK. I'll bite.

    Lovell's 1940 edition has a "Chad's Mkt" located in NDG at 6139 Sherbrooke W.

In theory, that puts it on or near the corner of Beaconsfield Avenue but I can't really see any building on that corner (or around it) that would suit the photo.

Of course, I'm sitting on the other side of Canada and depending on Google Maps it's not like I can go down there and check it out.

Whatever building is across the alley at the right looks like it could have been very impressive, based on the sliver of profile on the photo so I would be surprised if that building and the building in the photo no longer existed.

I've also wondered why the shutters fell completely out of fashion.

They actually make more sense to me to have them than not have them since they can provide shade at the same time as air circulation.

  2. This is 1849 Ste. Catherine West where J.B. Turcotte Furs once did business.

Google Maps has Ultramode Lashes at that address today.

The brickwork has obviously been modified over the decades, with a small extension to the west end of the original building. Nevertheless, the slightly arched central windows of the top storey are basically intact.

Notice the patterned brickwork design of the adjacent building to its west and compare it to the same pattern of the building on the northeast corner with St. Marc.

What was to the right? Seemed pretty grandiose.
