Thirty murders were committed in Montreal in 2015, about the same as the two years prior.
The total is almost identical to 2013 and 2014 which saw 27 and 28 murders committed.
For a while it looked like the total
might not even hit 20 but a spate of murders hit late in the year, causing an unfortunate spike. Note that this data is subject to change as investigations progress.

An earlier version of this article stated that Helene Leduc, the SAQ cashier shot in 2010 and who died in January 2015, had been classified as a murder victim. Indeed she was but a subsequent review reversed that decision in May, so that is not longer considered a 2015 homicide file.
Here is an unofficial list I compiled of past murder totals in Montreal 1987 - 70, 1988 - 62, 1989 - 103, 1990 - 70, 1991 - 77, 1992 - 76, 1993 - 71, 1994 - 52, 1995 - 59, 1996 - 54, 1997 - 49, 1998 - 41, 1999 - 52, 2000 - 49 2001 - 66, 2002 - 48, 2003 - 41, 2004 - 43, 2005 –35, 2006 –43, 2007 –43, 2008 –29, 2009 - 31 2010 - 37, 2011 - 35, 2012 - 35 2013-27, 2014-28.
Great article. Small mistake on number 8: "and appears. It appears to be a professional hit."
ReplyDeleteGood summary. I do wonder if pot/hash legalization will lead to a lower annual death count or will the violent people just move to another domain.
