According to legend the Point was once dotted with something like 40 bars.
An effort to catalogue the taverns and bars been undertaken on a Facebook site and many have noted various names of establishments but we are attempting to put them into a geographical and chronological time frame.
Please help with information in the comments section.
Mostly these places were peaceful but the tales of violence tend to be what we remember.
At the 1&2 on Butler West End Gang assassin and general madman Jackie McLaughlin supposedly shot a guy in the leg because he didn't like the way the guy treated his girlfriend.
The Olympic Tavern, once known as the Bucket of Blood was where one of the McGurnahans was shot dead, supposedly as punishment for cutting Alan Ross in the face with a bottle.
The Palomino was where Mike McManus was shot eight times but survived.
And we have written about the mayhem at the Do Drop In elsewhere on Coolopolis.
Nowadays people want wifi, not rounds of beer so such places are almost such establishments are gone.
Please help fill out this map with more locations and stories. Any precise dates and addresses will be much appreciated.
One can't forget Charlie's tavern on the corner of Center and Conde. I been there many times trying to coax my step-father out before he got himself tossed out. And he worked there, but only to pay his beer tab. He didn't always succeed, he took a few off the old noggin in that place. He's passed now may he RIP, he has left me with more stories about the point to last a life time.
ReplyDeleteThe waiter Duncan, who is Ritchie Matticks brother in law is still alive and living in Noyan, QC. I seen him the other day.
