If you're standing at the front door of where the Little Burgundy swimming pool now sits, and then got trapped a time vortex bringing you to the summer of 1967 you might see The Satan's Choice motorcycle gang hanging around outside the pool hall on Notre Dame near Des Seigneurs.

The photo appeared in Weekend Magazine 23 Sept. 1967 with the article "Riding Against the Square World."
Satan's Choice was a leading biker gang that mainly scared people and distributed marijuana. Many of them became hard-core drug users, with methamphetamine being popular in the group.
Some of the more decent guys turned nasty. Some of the decent guys quit.
The first figure on the far left is unknown. The second, standing in the black sleeveless shirt, was named Yvan.
Third, Satan's Choice President Rod McCleod (Afro-Canadian on the motorcycle). Sitting behind him on the bike is Michel Lefebvre.
Rocky, with the shades, is on the next motorcycle over.
On the next motorcycle after that (striped shirt) is Marcel Polidor.
Sergeant at Arms Walter "Johnno" Johnson from Halifax is the dark-complexioned man on the motorcycle at the right and Tony Franacci at right, is talking to him.
Mike French appears to be the man in the white shirt and blue vest looking down to his left while leaning against the middle pillar, although others thought he might be either the one either in the orange or red-checkered shirt at the doorway.
They had a splashy gang war with The Outlaws which involved some craziness.
You'll note Joe from Joe's Snack Bar was so anxious for change he'd offer 35 cent shoe shines, according to the sign that has been sucked down by gravity.
There's also a sign for "Hamburg" on the right. I guess they wanted to save money but shortening the name. Many restaurants advertised hamburg at the time.
Unlike the racist Hells Angels which bans people of an African complexion, this gang seems to have had at least three black members. The one on the far right was possibly named Johnson, a much-feared bully from Halifax.
The legendary sadist Mike French, who was killed a few years later, appears to be the guy in the doorway with the red/orange shirt.

Unfortunately I knew Micheal French. Always suspected he stole my new 1968 Triumph Bonneville.
ReplyDeletehaha...sucker.
DeleteWhat year was it stolen?

Deleteallways good intresting subjects, one of my favorite sites
ReplyDeleteI was outside a nightclub near Crescent Street, circa 1968, with some friends trying unsuccessfully to score some weed. We were already being ripped off by the bouncer (Joe Silcott) who was insisting we pay him for his time looking for some when Mike French pulled up on his Harley. With his very short nose and very wide shoulders he looked (in retrospect) like an Orc from Lord of the Rings. We decided it was time to go. Right now!
ReplyDeleteThat looks like French leaning against the middle pillar.
Mike French is on the far right behind the guy sitting with black hair. I believe the guy in the middle is Brian Powers...won't ever forget those 2...my sister and I raped by both of them...at the wrong place at the wrong time. We were in Laval when they came late at night to collect money from the woman who's house it was. Bonnie was her name. She had children and little did we know she was a drug dealer! We knew nothing about her but we had heard and we're listening to stories they were tell us. My sister was 15 and I 16 and so when they asked are you girls staying here, show us your rooms, we knew not to try and run...we both ended up with gonorrhea.
ReplyDeleteWhat an experience!!
Knew Rod MacLeod...he passed away a couple of years ago...bad guy? Not really...
