Un jour on Crescent Street - 40 photos of Montreal scenesters from 1973

Un Jour on Crescent Street is a 1973 book of photos taken on Crescent Street in downtown Montreal.
The photos were all taken on one day in August 1972 by graphic designer Vittorio Fiorucci (he died a couple of years ago) and contain several of his girlfriend at the time, the artist Reda Markovitz.
Texts were written by Pascal Lennad and Graham Mckeen, who was considered a major oddball character from that era and would be 84 if still alive.
The book comes with a couple of dozen more photos that I did not upload. Let us know if you have any memories of these people in the comments below. Please add names that we do not have.

  4. The Sexe Machine at 1469 Crescent was one of a kind, with luridly erotic art on the walls and topless waitresses. Here's an article in The Gazette from 1971 about the club: https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1946&dat=19711106&id=FEEjAAAAIBAJ&sjid=36EFAAAAIBAJ&pg=4556,6871255&hl=en

  5. I literally grew up on Crescent. Born in 1971, I had my baby bottle behind the bar at Thursday's. I also hung out at Carol's snack bar which was owned my Nick who was a wonderful man. carol was the name of his daughter. Nick also lost his son to a motorcycle accident in early eighties I believe. I lived in the apartment building before it became Hotel de la montagne.

  10. That's my sister, Janet Hanley, in photos 10 (sitting, at left), 11, 12 (at left), 31 (at left), 32 and 33 (at right, with her friend Trudi). Photos of both Janet and Trudi show up several more times in the video.

The photo of Janet on the motorcycle, beer bottle in hand and feet on the handlebars, was the cover of the magazine supplement that came with the Saturday paper (was it called Weekend magazine?). As she was still in high school at the time, it caused quite a stir.

Janet died in a car accident in 1978. If there are any copies of the book available, I'd love to get hold of one.

  13. Oh what memories. I recognize many in the photos but I never knew their names. The sheep dog’s name I believe was Sheba. So many beautiful Montreal girls. I suppose many of these good looking chicks are hens now - but still darned good looking. In fact I like them better after a little aging.
Wonderful documentary Kristian. Speaking about Thursday’s, I love that place. No one cooked Endives like they did.

My mum worked at the Winston Churchill Pub and my first home was on Crescent street right next door in 1969! I have sent my mum this link. I recognize the lady in #14 picture. That is Dawn Wheeler. Sadly she has passed away a few years ago.

  19. I`m 10.000 miles away now, and looking at this pics, felt as if I was walking down Crescent St again, as I did many times 4o years ago. Used to go to Casa Pedro and worked at Les Halles rest. Living in Montreal was the best thing that ever happened to me.
