for all my almost ten years living in Montreal, this was the only place I encountered two drank men who committed to fix my bike but start arguing next day and almost ended up with fighting.
The only violence I encountered on Young Street was committed by the teachers in St. Ann's boys school at the corner of Young and Ottawa. Of course this was in the 1940s and not the 1840s. In my time the street was otherwise quiet.
Great historical perspective of an often unheard of and forgotten street in Montreal. I would note that the Benedict Labre House located at 308 Young street is one of the few remaining institutions from Griffintown's days as an Irish district. It is a stark reminder of the districts hard working and drinking past, serving the remaining homeless population. I believe it still has ties to Saint Patrick's Basilica up the hill.
On another note, a few old timers from the district told me of a once famous boxing club that produced a number of golden gloves champions. I don't recall its name. It was located on this street if I am correct. Its heyday was in the 1950's.

ReplyDeletemy grandmother grew up on that street, 1920s, Irish of course. Their house would be where the VW outdoor lot is behind the dealership.
