Luigi Gino Maida: Hard-luck Montreal mobster tried to tame Sex Fox of Chibougamau

Luigi Gino Maida

Luigi Gino Maida (1939-1988) grew up in Montreal where he served the dominant Violi Mafia clan before becoming the big fish in the small pond of Chibougamau in the mid-1970s.

Maida was so close to the Violis that his wife Noella left him for Paolo Violi's brother Frank, he told a crime commission.

Maida landed in Chibougamau before 1978, arriving in a the tiny, remote, cold, northern town a couple of hours away from both Chicoutimie and Abitibi. Twelve thousand inhabitants enjoyed the town at the time while its current population is just 7,500 residents, 93% of whom are white.

The Violis shipped Maida off to Chibougamau to watch over their interests in the area, which could be seen as an unimpressive assignment bordering on banishment. In Chibougamau, Maida masqueraded as a legit businessman while enlisting the support of the Sex Fox bikers to distribute the cocaine, marijuana and other drugs he brought to town.

The Sex Fox motorcycle club was a colourful gang of degenerates scattered around a few towns who spent their days fighting in bars. The Sex Fox went back to at least 1974, when they were mentioned in a news story that saw a  bar owner in the Laurentians injure a couple of them with bullets after they refused to remove their patches in his estaliblishment.

Richard "Black Jack" Carbonneau - who posed for a serious photo with a cigarette jammed into his beard - served as president of the Sex Fox of Chibougamau while Richard "Ti-Oiseau" Naud retained influence as one of its founding members. Members Gerard "Toto" Cimon and Claude "Clavicule" Ladouceur were particularly prone to violent  fights for no reason.

Maida's exile from Montreal proved fortuitous. Violi associates were under attack from the Sicilian Rizzuto clan who gunned Frank Violi dead on 8 February 1977. The Rizzuto faction then shot Montreal capo Paolo Violi dead at 5880 Jean Talon E. dead on 22 January 1978 and then killed the third brother Rocco, for good measure, on 17 October 1980.

Maida's relationship with the Sex Fox soured, predictably. as he felt that they were consuming more drugs than they were selling. The relationship degenerated further when the Sex Fox sided with a teenage boy who had a $700 debt to Maida. The youth came to the bikers for help and they ended up committing a robbery to help with the young man repay it.

Maida cut ties with the Sex Fox gang and hired a single biker from the Black Spiders gang of Quebec City known as Gros Dan, who ended up getting in many fights with the Sex Fox.

The Maida-Sex Fox story was reported in regional papers when all were forced to testify at the CECO crime commission hearing in October 1978. Maida denied everything while the bikers spoke of him in an unflattering manner.

Maida was sentenced for five months for his drug dealing and hung around Chibougamau until at least November 1984 when he was jailed for another 30 months for a dozen accusations, ranging from parole violations, assasult, reselling stolen goods and dealing drugs.

Maida later returned to Montreal where he toiled at the lowest levels of mobster activity, working as a driver for strippers, transporting them to clubs around Quebec.

On 6 April 1988, 49-year-old Maida stopped his car at the corner of Maurice Duplessis and 63rd Ave in Rivieres des Prairies when someone stuck a small calibre gun near his head and pulled the trigger.

Maida died and the killer was never caught.

Maida's obituary stated that he was survived by sons Giovanni and Stephen and wife Noella, which suggests either that his wife never actually left him for Frank Violi or returned to him after leaving him.
