Pub St. Charles, the last r
emaining bar on below-the-tracks side of the Point can be yours.
It's in a dramatically industrial spot just beneath the Bonaventure expressway where it hovers over Wellington. Make an offer. Owner Helene tells me that biz has taken a big hit since the smoking ban. She's looking less-than-thrilled about this. She's a longtime veteran of the bar scene in the Point and this one could be her last stab at glory. It seems like a nice enough place. No ruffians there when I popped in, but truly it seemed a wee bit sleepy when I walked in with my small entourage (lawyer, manager, hairdresser and grooming artist).
I think the last bar left in Point St-Charles below the tracks is the "Do drop in" on Wellington, next to the bridge.
ReplyDeleteThis will tell you evert'in you need to know and more about that now-closed place.

Oops, try this, it should work better.

Some of the bars in the Point that are now gone include The Palomino (burnt down 10 years ago), The Fiesta, Brasserie Maman as well as the Bucket of Blood, the Westlake, etc. I'd like to shoot a quick video with someone touring the Point, a sorta oral history of the area's bars, if anybody can suggest someone who could do this, lemme know.
ReplyDeleteI first set foot into this "pub" in 1987. As a young "macho" guy, I thought it was heaven. It had a pool table, cheap beer and a bunch of porno movies going on the many tv's. On top of that, there wasn't blasting music so I could actually hold conversations with my buds. I guess the movies were coming in from satellite as it had/has a giant dish on its roof. For some strange reason, I don't remember any women...just old guys. As a matter of fact, I'm not even sure they had a girl's bathroom.
ReplyDeleteI've walked by there a million times in the last 9 years and have never gone back in. I wonder why?
The lack of a giant satellite dish should have told me something. Everything I said in my above comment was actually about the Pall Mall at the corner of Wellington & Butler. Sorry 'bout that.
