The tall building's the Laurentian Hotel at the southwest corner of Peel. It was there until the early '80s. (Tweak: it came down in '78; see comments.) The two-storey job at the far right is the old bus station, before it was moved to a prestigious site on Berri by Junkie Square.
That pic needs its note read by Ed Herlihy.
ReplyDeleteI love these old pictures of Montreal,......as many years as I have been away from Montreal,.I still proudly announce ,that I'm from Montreal when asked.....
ReplyDeleteI also still refer to the street as Dorchester Blvd. although I know it's 'new' name (LoL)
The Laurentian Hotel was dismantled in the mid seventies, not in the early 80's. It was just about gone (just a hole in the ground) when I started working across the street in 77.
ReplyDeleteThe Laurentian was a Sheraton-franchised operation, with a Murray's Restaurant on the Ground Floor, Dorchester-side.
ReplyDeleteThe Bus Terminal moved to Berri-de Montigny in 1970, shortly after the reorganization of CSL's motor coach holdings into Voyageur Colonial Ltd., Voyageur (1969) Inc., and Metropolitain Provincial (1967) Inc. Macy's Terminal Enterprises was the legal owner of the station, and operated the inside concessions....Bonaventure Enterprises operated the William Street maintenance facility.
The land is still undeveloped...even the terminal site BEFORE this one, the city's original 1920s bus terminal on Phillips Square, is still a parking lot.
