This is perhaps Verdun's most historically significant building.
It's where the first meetings were held when the village was formed in 1875 and when it became a city in 1907 (yep. 100 years ago). So what became of this treasure at Church and Lasalle known as the Pavillion? It was demolished in 1954, that's Mayor Edward Wilson's reign.
It was demolished for a gas station.
There was another Pavilion along the Verdun waterfront just east of the tennis club near Woodland. It was torn down around the late 60's. It was the hip hangout when the boardwalk was actually made of boards and overlooked the river. In the 40's and 50's cool jazz people like Maynard Fergusson played there as the legend has it.
ReplyDeleteOddly I think it might have been Wilson who once declared, "The city of Verdun will never allow private development on the riverfront."
