Pit bull explosion - disaster lurks

The Ontario pit bull ban has led to a lot of those dogs floating over to Montreal and a lot of people getting hurt by these dogs. People who own pit bulls aren't exactly the brightest or most trustworthy people, so it's no big surprise that they end up running around without leashes, terrorizing people. Last week one kid got hurt here in NDG as a dog got out of his house for the 4 th time and chased everybody around the park unsupervised. In one borough alone (Ville Marie - ie: downtown) dog bites rose five times between 2006 and 2007. Time, we sez, to ban these scumbag dogs here as well.

At the same time as banning the dogs, ban the tattooed freaks who own them as well.

As long as we're baning things here, Wayne, could we ban your ignorant perception of tattoos?

  3. While I agree that there are some idiots who want certain dogs as a fashion/status accessory, I'd like to see the breakdown of bites to breeds in the increase in bites that you mentioned. I know a couple of people with various 'tough breeds'; staffies, American pits, etc. and they've been raised right, lovely loving dogs. When I was a kid, I was bitten by a black lab, I hold no grudge against the breed, the dog was brought up wrong and my approach threatened the dog. But of course a debate can go back and forth here and that's not going to get us anywhere. I agree to disagree.

I see that you will not be buried in the Jewish Cemetery anytime soon.
The prohibition against tattooing is directly stated in the Torah -- "You shall not make gashes in your flesh for the dead, or incise any marks on yourselves: I am the Lord" (Leviticus 19:28).
I am a religious man. More than 1 Rabbi has taken the same position.

I read something a while back about how pit bulls have gotten a bit of a bad rap. I wish I could remember where.

For Wayne: "Anyone who judges others favorably will be judged favorably in Heaven" (Shabbos 127b). This follows the general principle that G-d rewards and punishes us "measure for measure" (Mishna Sotah 1:7). If we are patient and understanding with others, G-d will act in the same manner towards us.

I'd work on that anger if I were you.

  7. Statistically pit bulls bite less than other breeds, but that's likely a result of the fact that people go to great lengths to come anywhere near a pit bull. There's a helluva lot of dog bites happening in Quebec though, the stats are eye popping and the harm - particularly to children - is heartbreaking.

Mr. Anonymous -- please report back to us on the percentage of tattooed vs non-tattooed residents of the fine facilities managed by Stockwell Day under the Correctional Services Canada banner.

it's unfortunate but true, a lot of pitbull owners are the skuzzy type...but i have seen a few pitbulls around here who are really sweet and cute and whose owners are nice and normal.

  10. Karla and Paul looked sweet too. Normal people don't cavort with the most destructive dogs possible.

  11. BTW, a woman was attacked last night by a pitbull in that same park where the photos were taken.

can someone show these "statistics" that are being bantered about instead of empty claims...dogs, whatever breed, are living creatures with individual personalities , a sense of free will, and psychological limits. Agreed. There is potential for trouble with some breeds, but the general public at large seem to look at them like ipods, cel phones, or cars.

    by the way, great blog!

  13. Here's some info from a few years back:

According to the coroner’s office, which investigated and released a report on dog attacks in 1999, 117,000 Quebecers reported having been bitten by a dog in 1997.

The typical canine attack has been profiled repeatedly: the victim is often under five years old—in fact, three of four victims are under 10.

Most dogs belong to the family or friends, the attack is usually the dog’s first and victims most often suffer bites to the face and neck.

There’s also some indication that dog attacks are becoming more serious. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, the American canine population increased by two per cent between 1986 and 1996, but the percentage of bites requiring medical attention rose almost tenfold during that same period.

The Montreal SPCA receives 33,000 animals a year, and between 2,500 to 3,000 of those are aggressive dogs, according to Barnoti. Most of them are euthanized at the centre.

i was bitten by a dog that was a nice crossbreed...you just never know what kinds of dogs are going to bite you. I'm more worried that the same people who tend to have pitbulls have little kids...

  15. The idiot midget on my block whose white pit bull has run rampant and hurt a woman and a child has a ton of children in his home. When confronted about his dog's behaviour, he claimed it must be a different white pit bull and then offered fisticuffs in the middle of the street. Guy doesnt' even have the balls to own up. Great way to ingratiate yourself to your new neighborhood. Apparently the woman who was bitten is planning legal action against him. Too bad there's no police in this town.

I'm a regular at the Girouard dog run, and there are some asshole pitbull owners that come by from time to time. their dogs have been agressive to the other dogs MANY times, and they think it's funny. even as a puppy, one of the female pits was a bully already. they show off how striong the dog's jaws are by hoding them up on their leash by their teeth. Not cool, IMO.

Many of us have just started to leave when they show up. Nobody wants them or their agressive dogs around.

  18. Codswallop. I know of at least (at LEAST) a dozen friends who have pit bulls, and all their dogs are among the friendliest and most decent-natured animals I know. I'm obviously also aware of dipshits with dogs they mistreat, neglect, and train to attack, but haven't you ever seen one of those chumps with a rottweiler, a shepherd, or a doberman? The idea of banning an animal is horseshit.

  19. Ps. I generally enjoy your blog and read it daily, if the vehemence in my above post didn't quite get that appreciation across.

  20. No troubles. But many animals are banned. I don't know the actual laws but I'm pretty sure there's something in one of the various levels of legality that prohibit me from walking down St. Lawrence with a lion or a rhino, so the principle has been enshrined and I don't see any problem extending it to a beast which is not only dangerous but also has a pretty bad track record for its past performances.

  21. I see what you're getting at, but those bans deal with animals that are generally impossible to control. Like I say, I know (and you probably do too) lots of people who have well-trained and affectionate pit-bulls as pets, and I can only imagine how heartbroken they'd be if the government told them they had to either give their dogs away to someone out of province, or have them destroyed. Particularly when your average nu-metal fan with shaved head and goatee and beaten-dog accessory would just shift to any number of other dogs who could be just as vicious.

I am, however, for laws which make owners responsible for their dogs-- particularly after getting attacked and bitten last year by some imbecile's jumpy/aggro collie (yeah, Lassie) in the Parc Du Portugais last year. Buddy seemed to think it wasn't his problem, even as I attempted, ever cordially, to make him aware that it fucking was. A push for tightening owners' legal responsibility to control their animals seems to me a better cure-all than banning breeds.
