Montreal - not much fish'n'chips in this town

Coolopolis has learned that what many consider to be the best fish and chips shop in town will soon be demolished for a condo project that will also be built over the adjacent parking lot on Church Street just north of Verdun Avenue.

The joint was owned by the Maison Egg Roll folks, one of whom was married to Alex Hilton, with the usual bedlam resulting from that association.

Apparently those in the know, such as Newfoundlanders, considered this place to have the greasiest, fattest - aka the most delicious - batter in town.

Not long ago Red Lobster shut down its operations here as well, as did the large Desjardins seafood restaurant on Mackay.

Where are you going to get your fish and chips now?

Ye Olde Orchard, O'Reagans, McKibbins, Hurley's, and various other pubs. :)

  2. It's never the same in pubs though.
I'm gutted, I hadn't managed to eat there yet (cycled there once but it was closed). Is it still open though? And isn't there another one out West Island somewhere?
I'll just have to wait till the next trip to England otherwise... although there's a decent chippy on Queen Street West in Toronto, believe it or not.

There used to be a Mommy's Fish n Chips in Lachine, but I think that closed years ago. It used to be on Notre Dame near 28th.

Red Lobster closed down...geez...it's got to be 10 years ago?

If you want to venture off-island, there's a worth-crossing-the-Mercier place in Chateauguay called "Aux Frites Dorées" on the main drag, just as you get into Chtgy. Easily on par with Mommy's/Mammy's.

I didn't know the Mommy's in Lachine had closed. I went there a few years back only to discover it had been sold and was no longer Scottish-run & stocked with goodies from Scotland, which was a huge disappointment.

Mommy's is still open in Lachine. It's close to the bike path for those wishing to burn calories. They're hiring too, according to the sign in the window.

The Greenspot has a passable F&C.

Glad to hear the Lachine one is still open, where exactly is it?

Anyone know why it went from "Mommy's" to what appears to be "Mammy's"?

I'd assumed the Mammy's/Mommy's similarity was just a coincidence, with no connection.

I'll be kicking myself doubly if it turns out this was another Scots fish and chips place in Montreal, and I was missing out on my Irn Bru and Snowballs (and other marvelously healthy things) unnecessarily.

BTW, I was in NYC a while back and went to a very English fish and chips shop in the Village. Run by young Brits to boot.

Anyway, I was disappointed and I suspect the reason was -- as mentioned here -- that it was too darn healthy, i.e. not enough grease.

Not sure if the link will work, but from Resto a go-go, it's the same owners/place.

I'm originally from Montreal and, sadly, never tried Mammy's.
But I've been to Newfoundland on 3 different occasions and sampled the Fish 'n Chips at both Chess's and King Cod's in St. John's. And, yes, I can attest to their fabulousness. Best I've ever had.
For the past 14 years, I've lived in Mesa, Arizona and had what I considered the best Fish 'n Chips place outside of Newfoundland about a mile from my home (go figure: great Fish 'n Chips in the desert...hundreds of miles away from the ocean!). Sadly, they closed down last month.
I do note Mammy's unilingual English sign in the photo of Mammy's posted on Coolopolis, replete with appostrophe. How the hell they got away with that I'll never know. But good for them! Bill 101 has no place in free and democratic societies.

How sad, I used to live in Verdun about 3 minutes of walk from Mammy's. We used to have fish & chips parties on top of our apartment building on Gordon street. I guess I won't be going there next time I'm in town...
