Libraries in the city's past

Burton's both sold and lent books, a biz-model that seems to have not survived.. According to Lovells, Montreal had a wide variety of libraries. It seems that people with books randomly became librarians.

  1. These places were called commercial libraries. One could rent a best seller rather than buy it, (although you coud do that too) just like we rent movies today.

They were quite popular in their time. My dad often decried their passing as he got older and had the time to read more again.

There were apparently still a few in the early Fifties, but they didn't last long after WWII.
