I once asked Bob Menard how many bandits he killed while on duty as a Montreal cop. He refused to answer but some have suggested it was quite over a dozen. Menard started as an uncover agent hanging around bad guys in bars. He then became a member of the Night Patrol until it was disbanded following an incident where they beat on the Dubois gang a little excessively. He subsequently became an undercover agent who lived in the apartment above Paolo Violi's cafe. In the end he was shifted onto the robbery squad.
I know of at least two confirmed killings done by Menard.
On January 31, 1985 Menard waited outside as two bandits fled a Steinbergs at the very end of Notre Dame East. Menard shot Rock Blais, 22, dead with a machine gun.
A few months later Shotgun Menard followed a couple of bank robbers into an alley and had a shootout with them, killing Marc Lorange, 20.
This time the bandits shot back and hit Menard in the lungs and the legs. The bandits were wearing bullet proof vests but Menard, then 50, was not. His career as a cop was over.
I've talked to Menard a few times. He told me that it's a lot cheaper, faster and easier to deal with a criminal with a cheap bullet than with prison

Wow...sounds like a great guy! Sheesh. And a machine gun in 1985? Surely that was NOT standard issue.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't a machinegun, but his good old 12 gage shotgun...
DeleteHis son died and his wife left him after all that.

DeleteLiving upstairs violi for 6 years, takes a lot of courage. Is it worth ur life, money, or career?? There will always be a mafia, no matter what. He helped eliminate one, but opened the door for the next one.
ReplyDelete@ Kristian: His son did pass away but she did not leave him right after that.
