At Coolopolis we had long been told that Mussolini built two buildings in Montreal. One was the Casa D'Italia on Jean Talon.
The other was in Ville Emard. Where in Ville Emard? That was the mystery. Now we've narrowed it down. It was on Springland near Hurteau, according to this 1941 article announcing that the government had seized the two Casa D'Italias in Montreal. By this time however, it was being used as a private residence. Hard to tell which of the buildings it might have been.
However quite some time later I found something in the Lovells from 1938 called the Fascio d'Italia. There were three in Montreal and one was at 3000 Jolicoeur, a couple of blocks away from Springland and Hurteau,
denbhea - I remember a store .. corner of Springland and Briand ... the man that ran it was a Mussolini fan from Italy. He said he was a Black Shirt and always had a Gun. Many of us use to go in there to buy odds and ends and he talked about the old days ... maybe he lived in "the" building ...
ReplyDeleteThe building is located at 2831 Springland. You will find it in Lovell's Directory. It became a private residence. It was a small property and could easily be overlooked.
