I knew Yank when he was Yankee Falovitch, growing up on Dalou Street in the mid-1950's. I remember going with him and his dad in the butcher shop truck to get my polio vaccine at the former Community Hall on Decarie, in NDG. Seems like yesterday...
Relax, Wayne. It was fairly common in those years for Jewish families to change their family names. I think they did it so they wouldn't stand out, and could more easily "integrate" into Quebec society.
I don't think that they were any less trustworthy than anyone else.
Yank probably changed his name so that he could sell more records. Mind you, with weird Al Yankovic on the recent scene, suddenly "Yank Falovitch" doesn't seem do odd.
Heraldo is right. As a matter of fact use your head Wayne. Lets name the people he works with. Muhammad Ali (real name Casius Clay) by the way not Jewish. Gary U.S. Bonds (real name Gary Anderson) not Jewish Tom Jones (real name Thomas Woodward) not Jewish. Engelbert Humperdink ( Jerry Dorsey) not Jewish & whos mother would create this one. It is VERRY common for entertainers to change their names. Yank happens to be a outspoken Jew & is hiding from no one.
Hey Harold. I remember us fighting with choke cherries, LOL Dalou, WOW, ancient history! How are you? As far as Wayne's comments, I changed my name for the music business, not to hide being a Jew. Harold is correct, Ali, Bonds, Jones, Humperdinck, not their birth names. Ali was the only one who changed for religious reasons, he became a Muslim.

ReplyDeleteI always mistrust someone who changes his name so that he "doesn't sound Jewish".

It would seem to me that if he really wanted to "integrate" with Quebec society, he should have changed his name to RĂ©al Tremblay.
ReplyDeleteDo you remember Rickey Marks of the Footprints?
