Maurice Bourassa, the longtime owner of the St. Sulpice bar on St. Denis created this amazing monument at the Cote de Neiges (Notre Dame des Neiges) cemetery for Pierre Luc Dorsonnens (1949-2002), presumably his ex-lover. The sculpture harmonizes with the bare branches of trees all around. It goes against the trend that has seen unappealing headstones outnumber the real nice ones at Canada's biggest, most beautiful cemetery. He's a beaut!
I thought that cemeteries were now insisting on standardized, cookie cutter monuments. It's great that N. Dame de Neiges is not.
Maybe the i.d. inscription is on the bench next to the monument, like with Mordechai Richler. His monument is facing an inscribed bench, across a road, overlooking east-end Montreal.
The bench next to it appears to be a gay couple, together for 35 years before one of them died in 2002. The other apparently still among us. The names read: Pierre-Luc Dorsonnens (1949-2002) and Maurice Bourassa.

A little "Googling" finds that Pierre-Luc d'Orsonnens was a Quebec visual artist.
ReplyDeleteThe unusual artwork was probably one of his works (I'll bet).
Wonder if I'll be allowed to decorate my grave with some of my better pics?
I see that those two founded the St. Sulpice which is a bar on St. Denis popular with French-speaking college kids. http://vimeo.com/lesaintsulpice
