Parisians knock-off Montreal's iconic Schwartz's

Some people have opened a deli under the name Schwartz in Paris at 16 rue des Ecouffes in the 4th arrondissement (tel : 48873129) and are planning to open another in the 16th near the Eiffel Tower.
Our source says, "I telephoned them and they don’t even know what 'smoked meat' is though they are a Jewish deli and their logo looks very close to the original." -

  1. That sucks that they don't know what smoked meat is as it would be ALOT closer for me to go to Schwartz's in Paris for a smoked meat sandwich (a ride in the Chunnel or on a ferry from England!) than wait for my once-a-year-7-hour-plane-ride trip to Montreal! I wish my mom could send me over Schwartz's as they don't have smoked meat here, only rubbery "pastrami". :(

  2. Hate to break it to you, but Schwartz's has gone WAY downhill in the last 15 years. Their smoked-meat sandwiches in particular are but a former shadow of what they used to be.

I didn't believe it myself when I heard it, and I had been craving their sandwiches for years. Ignoring the warnings I went and ended up with a dry and tasteless sandwich. Oh well...must be an off day. Went back again, same thing. Then several weeks later, and again and again. All vast disappointments.

Maybe this place in France could pick up where Schwartz's left off? ;)

  3. I never failed to bring french tourists to Schwartz’s and they all have been impressed.

Except for one who said «oh, c’est juste du p’tit salé»…

Maybe the parisian incarnation should serve p’tit salé.

(Although the recipe is roumanian, one of my cousin who is from Roumania doesn’t like it. Oh, well).

Once in a while, I hang with Jack Lieber, who was a good friend of Maurice Zbriger (the musician who was a prior owner), and he would talk about the good old times spent there…

  5. Hmm, maybe I was a bit too critical above. Let's just say I wouldn't turn my nose up at a Schwartz's smoked meat sandwich if offered (even dry!). Still, while tasty, it's a *vast* disappointment compared to what it used to be. It's gone from mouth watering to-die-for heaven, to... well... plain ho-hum or just OK.

    See today's Wazoo. p. C1, Feb. 1, 2011.

Schwartz's Montreal is to Shwartz's Paris as Coolopolis is to:
    a) Reuben's Deli
    b) Dunn's Famous
    c) The Gazette
    d) Delicatessen Quarterly
