These are the top Montreal Star delivery boys from 1971. These guys would have been born around say 1953-1958, making them about aged approximately 53 to 58 today. They are: Luigi Zaccardo, Clive Bernard, Raymond Farquhar, Jacques Lebel, Guy Gehlsen, Martin Kay, Leonard Tapp, Edmond Moscovici, Gary Rice, Louis Taillon, Michel Hurtubise, Carl Thomas, John Russell, Maron Semenok, Paul Tattersall, and Wayne Thorgeirson.
One would assume that these accomplished young gentlemen would have gone on to prominence of one sort or another. But I googled each name and came up with nada. Where'd everybody go?

Small world, Leonard Tapp is my Brother-in-Law's brother...

Trafficopter's giving you lots of story ideas, huh!
ReplyDeleteHey, I myself delivered the Montreal Star back in the late 1950's, earning (back then) the princely sum of about $2.00 or so a week.
ReplyDeleteOf course, that was when a hot dog cost fifteen cents and chocolate bar a dime! Ahh...the memories!
I remember loading up my wagon with about 50 papers costing nickel each. Newsprint was cheap in those days!
The worst part of the job was having to deal with the regular, tight-fisted customer who kept making excuses not to pay until "next week", until finally, the Star terminated delivery to them until they changed their ways.
I believe that young boys were no longer allowed to be hired to deliver early-morning newpapers sometime in the late 1980s when one lad was apparently kidnapped and murdered. Sign of the times!
I'll see if I can dig up more details about it.
These days, the paper is delivered at an hour before boys are legally allowed to wake up. And by car too...
ReplyDeleteGuy Gehlsen, DOB: 28Mar61, died in August of 1980. He grew up in Baie d'Urfe, and attended Macdonald High School circa 1976-77. Other members of his class included musician Jeff Smallwood, Howard Brull (producer of CTV's Fashion Television), and Donna Pearson (daughter of Capt. Bob Pearson, of AC's Gimli Glider fame).
ReplyDeleteI remember we had a really cute Star delivery guy in my neighbourhood, he was older than I and I had a crush on him but I was not on his route. But I can't remember his name. Then there was another who delivered to our house but I can't remember his name either! I'm trying to see if I recognize either of these guys in the picture. Howard Brull married an ex-model.
ReplyDeletewe used to sell the sunday...express???? that came out in the mid late 70s for cash on sherbrooke between hampton and belgrave early sunday mornings and yes there were the creeps who would circle the block a few times ,,I am surprised they didn;t use the old smartie on a fishing line!!! lol or can u help me find my puppy we would freak them out by giving them quite a nasty earful!!!
ReplyDeleteI went to Mac with Guy, but moved away in Grade 10. I remember him as a really cute, nice kid. Heard through the grapevine that he died at 18. Fast forward to a few days ago, I was prowling through Lakeview Memorial Cemetary in Pointe Claire on a genealogy quest and found his grave. Sad, wonder what he would have done with another 30 odd years...
ReplyDeleteOh, I see in 1982 Guy Gehlsen died in Florida, he was in military aircraft maintenance and was awarded a posthumous medal. http://bit.ly/k5oRFk
ReplyDeleteI'd never heard how he died. Must have been very tough for his family and those close to him.
ReplyDeleteThanks and take care....
Guy Jason Gehlsen died in Nevada, Aug 3rd, 1980. He was in the US Airforce and died in a motorcycle accident.
ReplyDeleteHe was my brother, and his family misses him.
Thanks for all the posts.
