The Pontiac plaque

  Dubious plaque much?
A house on Pontiac street, just east of St. Joseph and St. Denis, suggests
that a great Indian warrior Pontiac lived at the site.
Pontiac was born along the Detroit River and lived from 1720 to 1769 and that house is considerably newer, naturally.

  1. My guess is that it was where Jackie and Rachel Robinson lived in the summer of 1946 when Jackie played with the Royals on his way to Brooklyn where he became the first African-American to play in major league baseball. In any event, his former Montreal residence was the recent setting for a plaque ceremony where the US government recognized this contribution to civil rights.
At 83, I am old enough to have spent a lot of time at Delormier Downs that year ....and I did.

  2. A plaque adorns the street number 4767 with the following inscription:

"Montréal 1757. En ce lieu fit halte Obwondiag, dit Pontiac, chef Odawa, vainqueur des Anglais."

If I recall correctly, Jackie Robinson lived on Mentana Ave., near Lafontaine Park - not too far a walk from Delorimier Stadium.

  5. 8232 de Gaspé avenue was Jackie Robinson's house the year he played here.
