Next time you're fine-dining at the McDonald's on Notre Dame just west of Atwater, remember the bloody double murder that took place in its shadow on New Year's Eve 1972.
The horrific scene took place in Apt B-26 of 260 Greene - a 27-unit building erected just five years earlier. Bernard Barriault, 22, and his girlfriend Carol Reginbald, 21, returned home from a party in a taxi driven by Yves D'Anjou, 22 of Verdun. They invited him up for a beer after a night of partying. But a killer had been hiding in the home with a rifle. He detained the young woman for some time according to one report and then stabbled all three of them at 260 Greene.
It was midway through the night and the visitor wished Barriault a happy yuletide with two bullets. He died in the bathroom. Regimbald, 21, was found dead in the living room shot and stabbed 30 times. Barriault was a loan shark. D'Anjou was found slumped outside on his taxi but survived. The crime press implied that he committed the crimes, the Gazette that he was a victim. Either way, he survived and would now be about 64 years old.
Jean Guy Lalonde liked to visit his girlfriend, who was a widowed single mother in Brigham in the Townships. On 26 Dec. 1973 he brought gifts but her kids weren’t quite on the same page as him. He was a particularly brutal man who liked children to be disciplined. The power went out and a quarrel ensued and he said he was leaving with the gifts he brought. Well, that wasn't a very popular plan and the woman shot him dead.
In 1976 on Christmas Eve, Gerard Petel, 48, was hanging out at 5049 St. Urbain when a 17-year-old stabbed him to death.
