Sarah Dutil Coculuzzi was killed in LaSalle at just 11-years-of age in early January 1994.
She babysat two kids at the home of her mother's friend and was meant to sleep over and go to school the next day but that woman's boyfriend Timothy Cobb did unspeakably awful things to her and her body was discovered in a dumpster.
Cobb confessed that he had premeditated the killing. He pledged to die in jail and quickly attempted suicide by slicing his own throat but he survived and started his 25-year sentence.
The 25-years was meant to be the minimum but in Canada prisoners often get sprung prior to 25 years in spite of the wording.
A Corrections Canada official told Coolopolis that Cobb has an Unescorted Temporary Absences and Day Parole Eligibility Date of 2016-01-21 and a Full Parole Eligibility of 2019-01-21.
The tragic death was surely an unbearably painful event for her family but the circumstances around it only made it all that much worse for them.
Lorraine Dutil was not only forced to bear the inconceivably awful burden of losing her only daughter, but was also subsequently scrutinized in the media for allowing her daughter to babysit for a man with a dubious past.
A journalist won an award for reporting on the circumstances surrounding the crime but that was surely no solace for the family, who were not at all comforted in their moments of devastation.
Her brother Joey, two years younger, clearly did not have an easy road following the death of his sister. For the last few years he has had a note on his Facebook profile that once read. "i like shadowy areas and beleive in the devil."
Young Sarah was reported to have a lot of good qualities, although just 11, she had a 16-year-old boyfriend who would drive her to school.
She often slept over babysitting because she wanted to save money to go to Florida to visit her aunt.
Her parents were separated and her mother Lorraine was with another man, while her biological father Freddie Coculuzzi, an unemployed bricklayer, was also devastated by the awful loss.
The worst thing about the murder was that the killer, Timothy Cobb should likely have already been in prison.
He had been charged with shooting and killing Daniel Deschenes, 21, at St. James and Harvard in NDG in the summer of 1992.
The two were playing around with rifles on the cliff and Descehenes allegedly threatened Cobb that he would expose him for rapes he had committed. Cobb apparently snuck up and blasted him twice in the head.
But in June 1993 Superior Court Justice Henry Steinberg, was named to the Quebec Court of Appeal by outgoing prime minister Brian Mulroney and the defense lawyer balked at allowing the witness testimony be transferred to a new trial.
The witnesses themselves declined to return to give their testimony again.
As a result, Cobb was released and freed to kill the young Sarah.
The law was subsequently changed so that particular thing could not happen again.
A few weeks after the crime, a police officer came to the school to discuss the dangerous of drugs and mentioned that Cobb was high on Ecstasy when he killed the young girl and chopped her up.
Hearing a cop freely discussing the details of the violent murder-by-predator of their classmate was a shock for some in the room. At least one required attention from a nurse.

Sounds like a seedy family with high risk behaviour....sadly, it's usually the most vulnerable who pay for it.
ReplyDeleteI don't want to be too negative here in a story that's obviously a painful one, but you've got to admit that any family that let an 11-year-old go out with a boy of 16 that had a car is not a family of the most profound wisdom.
ReplyDelete(By the way, I hate how Blogger makes us comment in a different window so we can't easily look at the text we're commenting on. Isn't it time for a blogging system with a better interface?)
Sarah and I were good friends. This time of year she is greatly missed. I think about what she would look like, if she would have children and if she would still be as funny now as she was when we were kids. It saddens me to think that in my life time this man will be walking around the city like the rest of us going about our lives as thought nothing has happened Sarah isn’t gone and he did nothing wrong because he “served his time” .The only indication that something has changed in his life, being that he is old and wrinkly. I wickedly wish sometimes that he had not failed in his attempt..... However, I also know somewhere deep down that fortunately he will not be out for long before he is either confronted on the street or he commits another horrific crime (unfortunately) and gets caught and sent back to the penitentiary. I sometimes wonder if he would have been already deemed a dangerous offender had this smart, funny, beautiful 11 year old girl been the daughter of "important" parents. Makes you wonder. I love you Sarah and I’m thinking about you this Christmas. It’s been 18 years and I remember everything about our friendship & how special you were to me. Love Always Misty
ReplyDeleteHi Kristian, This is the same Misty. Sorry i don’t have any pictures wish i did. I haven’t completely forgotten what she looks like but almost. Cheers on the site BTW. I’m really liking it.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how id like to start.
ReplyDeleteFirst I do not appreciate your article about MY family. You have no right to exploit my family's loss. My family has suffered greatly over Sarahs loss for the past 19 years and she will always be loved and missed.
Have you ever considered how MY family might feel about your article being written? Obviously not because if you had you would have never taken the time out of your life to write this article.
Also you haven't live through this so what do you think gives you the right to think you know it all?
It would be extremely appreciated to take off the picture of my mother and brother off your article. They do not need to be exploited over the internet and nor did you have the permission to use these photos.
Last thing my brother is not a satanist, you obviously don't know what your talking about. You cannot take ''religious views'' on facebook seriously. No one i know does. It was supposed to be taken as a joke, for the people that actually KNOW my brother.
So please just take the pictures off and don't take time out of your life to write about my family or any other for that matter.
Sarah, I think of you often! Especially in times like these, right now there is a high risk offender with sightings in the town I live in and it just brings all the emotions right back. All of the anger and sadness! I hope you know you have not been forgotten! I am lost for words, just want you to know how much your missed and how often your in my thoughts! <3
ReplyDeleteSarah! You are missed! You are in my thoughts often but especially at times like these, there is a high risk offender whos been spotten in the city I live in. I am so paranoid< I kept my kids home from school. Timothy should not have gotten a second chance, never should he ever see the outside of that jail cell. I am sincerly sorry to your family for their loss and the stuff wheather true or false printed in the papers and the judgements. I see it all the time, when that little boy went missing from his home in sparwood, constantly people were attacking the parents, like thats of any importance, the importance is finding that child safe and sound. Sarah, whether your parents were wonderful or made a lot of mistakes it doesnt change how wrong it was! How they live their lives has no equivilance to anything and making judgements is not helpful in any way only hurtful in an already unbearably painful event. No matter how much time passes you will be in my heart! Sarah, you may be gone, but you, my friend, will never be forgotten! <3
ReplyDeleteI'm all for freedom of speech and encourage blogging, yet I must point out that some of the details featured in your blog post are based on speculation. You have taken it upon yourself to criticize the family and even referenced Facebook as your source. You're attempting to re-live this nightmare after those closest to Sarah endure enough. I encourage you to continue blogging, yet you should considering having respect & tact when doing so as opposed to submitting tabloid quality entries.
ReplyDeleteHe should never get out He will always be a threat one can not murder an innocent 11 year old child and ever change. He has no empathy.
