The dome in the distance is an obvious clue because although you say "west end" I don't recall anything quite that shape anywhere west of Atwater. I'm guessing it's the dome of what used to be called the Mother House and is now Dawson College, which might make this de Maisonneuve and Atwater, behind the Forum. It was probably not called "de Maisonneuve" then either.
I am going to go with Sherbrooke and Girouard. That house looks identical the one behind the apartment tower there now and that looks like the church with the disco sign up on Cote St. Antoine.
Throw us some more, but they should be tougher than this. Churches in particular are often dead-giveaways.
However, I'll bet there are places in town where one could be taken blindfolded and left to try to figure out exactly where the hell they are--unless they are veteran taxi drivers!
I could be wrong, as it is nigh onto 55 years, but, as I recall, there was a camera store on the S.E. corner which had a sign on the angled corner over the door which featured an image of a Bell and Howell movie projector.
I might be imagining this part, but, was there a beam of light projecting from the aperture of the sign camera to simulate a projection beam as in a theatre?
In the Sixties I briefly delivered groceries with a truck from Sol's Grocery on the North side of Sherbrooke just West of Decarie, thruout NDG.
Some clients were almost bums, and ordered beer and smokes exclusively. The delivery boy then had to hump three or four cases of 12 'Quarts' of Dow or Molson up 3 flights of stairs in the-almost sleazy walk ups off Sherbrooke, and the streets between Sherbrooke and then-named Western next to the CPR.
Western was two-way, then, thru to Coffee and W.B., and still went thru the park in Westmount.
The big Beer and Smokes orders seemed to come on 'payday', but, no one ever seemed to 'work'. TV on all the time, ashtrays full. Beer guts in abundance. Cat piss, too.
Every so often the big beer customers would order up and then 'Pay' with the deposit on the empties to go back for refund, so you had to carry 25 cases or whatever back down the steps to the truck.
Always when it was raining, snowing or at rush hour when you had to park a mile away, then get a parking ticket.
The truck was kept at night on the lot of the gas station on the S.W. corner of Decarie and S.
The other grocery 'boys' used bicycles with metal baskets, some bikes were 2-wheel, some were 3, the name of the grocery on a metal plate hung under the horizontal tube.
On occasion a policeman or two 'might' be found in the rear of the store having a beer.
On occasion cases of beer would be delivered to the fire station on Cote St. Antoine and Botrel and left on the apparatus floor behind the fire trucks. I always wanted to slide down the pole from the second floor.
One poor winter's day Sol, the owner, said to make a large pyramid of nice red apples in the display window facing Sherbrooke, and to be sure to put the best apples in the front and polish them all WELL.
I said no one would even want one.
He said the apples would all be gone by closing time.
He was RIGHT!
A bit of edible joy on a rotten winter day.
The 105 from Terminus Atwater went by on schedule, throwing slush onto the sidewalk, as the apples disappeared.

Hmmm, Ville-St-Pierre? Just a wild guess...
ReplyDeleteOr Côte-des-Neiges? Is that the Oratoire in the back?
ReplyDeleteIt's the north-east corner of Girouard and Sherbrooke looking north-west. Gent is waiting for his streetcar.
ReplyDeleteNE corner of Sherbrooke & Girouard?
ReplyDeleteNortheast corner, Sherbrooke W and Girouard?
ReplyDeleteNortheast corner, Sherbrooke W and Girouard?
ReplyDeleteLooks like the northeast corner of Sherbrooke West and Girouard.

ReplyDeleteQueen Mary seems to be the obvious guess. Likely wrong, but still my guess.
ReplyDeleteSherbrooke & Girouard, looking Northwest towards the park.

ReplyDeleteHoly crap you guys are right about Girouard & Sherbrooke W.
ReplyDeleteSee here for the building in the background:

How'd you figure that one out?!
The church is the first clue, located at 5565 Cote St. Antoine, north of the park.
ReplyDeleteThe building to the right of the billboard is clearly the same as the one which still exists at 3439 Girouard.
Sherbrooke and Girouard as mentioned.
ReplyDeleteIn the fall of 1951 we stood amongst hundreds on the slope of the park opposite the theatre to watch the Royal Motorcade travel along Sherbrooke.
So many changes, not many of them good.
Thank You.

That funeral home on Sherbrooke opposite the park was originally the home of NDG's Mayor Marcil.
ReplyDeleteThe small red building in the centre of Girouard Park was originally a police station.
How times change!

@ M P & I...
ReplyDeleteYou should have waited for when the firemen were away on a firecall, because that's when we kids once snuck into the station and slid down the pole!
But, anyway, you're still young enough to try it at the next opportunity, so go for it.
You only live once!
Sherbrooke and Girouard. You can see the Notre-Dame-de-Grâces park in the background, and the bell tower for st-Augustine church.
ReplyDeleteMy uncle told me that during the Depression, there were many teen hookers available in NDG Park
