Grand And Sherbrooke

 Grand and Sherbrooke around 1950.

SE corner of Grand and Sherbrooke. Now an Akhavan supermarket, I remember it as a "Dominion" supermarket in the 1960's or so. The two apt. bldgs. on the next corner are still there (including the "West End Barber Shop" which dates from at least the early 1950's), as well as most (all) of the smaller buildings on the west side of Grand. Not sure about the east side, however - it's hard to tell from Streetview if the large house from 1950 is the same bldg. that stands there now.

Unless there was an older building on the site, the first Lovell's listing is in 1957 - 6170 Sherbrooke W. was a "Dominion".

The house behind matches up to me. As does the southern apartment building on the west side, especially the 2 tone bricks, but that's where the similarities end.

The building in the photo is definitely not the building that stands there today. The Akhavan building looks like it was build in the 50s-60s and is much larger than the one being built in the pictures. I swear I spend more time counting windows in the quizzes than anything else.

I would give it to you based on the big house in the back. I checked this area for a match too but couldn't make one.

  3. Exactly the same building, but clearly upgraded having most of its windows replaced and/or reconfigured, others removed entirely (such as the first-storey ones on the west side), not to mention the added siding material which covers the original bricks.

In any event, the long-standing adjacent buildings confirm the location.

  4. Yes, it's Grand&Sherbrooke, the house behind, on Grand, matches (sloped roof with chimney and two windows on the top floor):

  5. 6170 Sherbrooke W. is listed in Lovell's from 1950 to 1955 as Hodge Bros. automobiles – just like the sign in the first photo says. Apparently the move to the new building wasn't good for the company, as it disappeared after 1955. No listing at that address in 1956, then Dominion Stores from 1957 (as the first commenter noted). Before 1950, Hodge Bros. had been less far out on Sherbrooke, near the corner of Grey Av.

SE corner Grand & Sherbrooke for sure. In picture #2 on the L/H side, you can see the Supertest sign , my father moonlighted there on weekends , pumping gas. Now Dunkin'Donuts.

  7. It is easy to be fooled by a building's current appearance after having been upgraded.

As a matter of fact, regarding those photos showing that house on blocks being moved from the northest corner of Decarie and Cote St. Catherine Rd., I realize now that the apartment building to the right of the white-bordered billboard sign is indeed still there: 5725 Decarie.

The bricks and windows have been replaced, the front balconies removed, and the black-bordered doorway at the extreme right has been re-configured.

Older buildings downtown are, in many instances, similarly upgraded and often very different from what they used to look like.
