Q-name where these cool old Montreal photos were taken
Can you name the location featured in these Montreal photos?
We can.
Except for the last three, which are: Motel Barbara somewhere in Lachine, somewhere on St. Catherine West, so bonus points if you can solve those.
1. Looking east to Windsor Station. The tracks in the foreground are roughly where today's Lucien L'Allier AMT station is.
2. Looks to be St. James looking east from roughly Rue Saint Jean.
3.Original covered Victoria Jubilee Bridge looking south from Montreal to the South Shore.
4.The old streetcar loop at the southwest corner of Boulevard Mont Royal and Park Avenue.
5.McGill Street looking north from Place Youville.
6.Looking north on University from about Dorchester toward Cathcart.
7. ?
8.Looking west along the former Lachine streetcar route's private right-of-way. Today the right-of-way is an extension of Rue Victoria. The bridge in the distance is the CPR's Adirondack Subdivision, which toward the left leads to the railroad bridge over the St. Lawrence Railway beside the Mercier.
What have you done to distort the sides of the streetcars in 4, 5, 6 and 8? No other photo of Montreal streetcars that I've seen, or can find, have those bowed curves along the sides, but all of yours do.
People selling their photos on eBay are purposely distorting the images to prevent people from copying them. Some have writing on them but eBay is changing the rules to disallow that.
Get thee to a Lovell's! That is for the last picture, of St. Catherine W. Fashions look kind of 1910-ish. Can make out what looks like Strathcona Cafe, which in 1909 was on McGill College. If you look it up it was given at both 5 and 25 McGill College. In any case the sign is a red herring and directed people to the cafe, off St. Catherine. (It was a pedestrian/streetcar world then and signs were important!)
But Lovell's gives Jos Marien as a hairdresser at #398, which would explain the barber pole on the right side. So the conclusion is the picture is taken looking east down St. Catherine from the south west side of the McGill College intersection. The original City and District Savings Bank is the imposing building with the witch's hat tower. The greenery down the street would be the elms in front of Christ Church and the spire in the distance is that of St. James United.
In photo No. 4, MTCo 1331 is operating on Rte. 7 Mount Royal upon which streetcars lasted until Sept. 1955. The photo is before 1951 as the car lacks the MTC 'Arrow' crest.
This turning loop was also used to turn streetcars operating on Rte. 11 Mountain Montagne which operated up the Mountain and thru the tunnel to Summit Loop ( which, in itself was jointly used by Rte. 93 Remembrance up from Cote de Neiges. )
The track for cars descending from Summit Loop/Lac des Castors can be seen angling off to the left behind the car, the upward track for cars to the Mountain is beyond.
Rte. 93 Remembrance came off in June 1955.
The Mountain Rte. 11 ex this location ended streetcar service in October 1957.
The building the cars looped around is still extant to right behind bus shelter in this Google view.
In photo No. 7, 'Historic Car' MTC 1046, painted in 'Traction Orange' is Eastbound at Tramways' Rockfield Stop on the boundary between VSP and Lachine.
At one time Upper Lachine Road/Notre Dame/Avon/St. Jacques/St James, et al would have crossed both the Tramways and the GTR/CNR to the right at grade here.
To the left, just visible in the photo, are the outbuildings for a service station which survived into the Seventies.
In the Fifties there were two stone pillars on the boundary between VSP and Lachine out-of-frame to the left.
Yes indeed. It seems the last CPR employees at Windsor Station are soon expected to move from the property. The railway now only rents a portion of the building they once owned. The building for the past few years has been owned by The Cadillac Fairview Corporation, which in turn is owned by the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan.

I remember that restaurant on the 2-20 in Lachine. Ate there a few times around 1968 or so. It wasn't good. The motel was gone by then.
ReplyDeleteFirst one is a no-brainer: Windsor Station.
ReplyDeleteSecond one is on St-Jacques street, near St-Jean, looking east.
Third one is a no-brainer again, Victoria bridge, between 1860 and 1895.
4th one is south of Mont-Royal at côte Ste-Catherine, roughly here.
ARRGH posted too fast!
ReplyDelete5th is on Mc-Gill at Y’ouville, looking north, about here.
6, 7 No idea.
8: on the Lachine run, looking west, immediately east of the CPR line about here
9 No idea.
Motel Barbabra was at 10145 Lajeunesse. Why did you think it was in Lachine Chimples?
ReplyDeleteCondos now adorn the site. It stood next to where the Motel Idéal now stands (next to the condos at 10191 Lajeunesse).

Actually wondering if they didn't reuse the norther part of the Barbara Motel for the Motel Idéal...? Anyone know?

ReplyDeleteIs CPR moving the last of so many jobs from Windsor Station to the West in sight of the Rocky Mtns in the near future??
