Montrealer tosses tomatoes at ex - fruity spousal abuse from 1956

As we know, fruit and veg sections bring out the worst in people (who told you that?-Chimples) and one particularly nasty incident went before a judge in 1956.
It started when Emile Derible, 46, decided to track down his wife and give her flowers.
So he went to a north end market in Montreal and left the flowers with another woman who knew his wife.
Derible said that he returned later and his wife who wasn't flattered by his floral bestowal.
Hubby said wife tossed tomatoes at him and next thing he was knocked out cold.
He blamed grocer Germain Deveze, 48, for knocking him out.
But Deveze had a different account.
He said that Derible was taking tomatoes and cucumbers from his stall to toss at his estranged wife.
So the fruit stand owner punched the spurned hubby in the stomach to prevent him from launching any more juicy and nutritious projectiles.
Derible was covered in red but the judge determined that might have been tomato stains and not blood.
  The judge dismissed everybody.
We're big fans of this sort of excellent newspaper reporting and bemoan the days when the flow of such infortaining articles stopped.
