The beautiful neon sign outside of the Silver Dragon Cafe at the corner of Church and Laurendeau (St. Remi) has been removed forever.
The restaurant was sold to the owner of the Dragon de Chine in Verdun.
He is renovating and will change the name and put up a new sign.
It's unknown when the restaurant will be reopened under the new name.
The sign did not light up in recent years.
Yhe excellent Matt Soar of Concordia's signage project has taken the sign to repair and place in a museum.
It is a very rare bit of heritage.
The sign was on the building for decades at the gateway to the area.
(Thanks to Jean-Francois Lambert for the tip)

The Silver Dragon was in operation since at least 1960. A search in Lovells would determine a more exact date. (Thx to Rohinton Gandhi for the photo of the old ad)

ReplyDeleteSo sad. I loved the Silver Dragon. Was it a dump? Hell yeah but the owner was super nice. We would always order a number 6 for two but change just about everything on it and he would rarely charge us extra. Best Chinese in Verdun. Dragon de Chine is shit. Maison Eggroll is half decent but fussy about substitutions. I will always miss the Silver Dragon.
ReplyDeleteA few years back the old MSN Group Verdun Connections had a posting on the Silver Dragon. Everyone had great comments on the restaurant but one jokester wrote that there wasn't a cat or rat within two blocks of the Silver Dragon.
