Montreal's greatest-ever building 1971 - now gone...
Regardless of what you might think, this building was Montreal's most charming. It was a hotel of some sort. It had real burning lanterns outside on the front wall. Whoever thought of knocking it down was nuts.
This building is wonderful! I bike by the parking lot that now occupies this space a couple times a day. My rides out of Griffintown would be much more pleasant if this was still there!
The Arcade Tavern was next door for awhile because my grand mother worked there in the 50's/60's. It moved to Ste-Catherine Street between Peel and Stanley on the south side and became the Arcade Restaurant. The jazz guys from the old tavern (who used to smoke weed in the park by McDonald statue) used to make the trip up to Ste-Cath from the jazz joints in Little Burgundy when the resto opened.

ReplyDeletePer the title of the photo link, and barely visible in its rooftop signage, it was the Hotel Colonial.
ReplyDeleteIs this not the building where Mayor Jean Drapeau had his restaurant named Le Vaisseau d'Or?
ReplyDeleteI believe it was in the basement of the Windsor Hotel, about three blocks to the north.
ReplyDeleteHey J.D.
ReplyDeleteBrief research would indicate that you are right about the Vaisseau d'Or being in the Windsor Hotel.
There was however a restaurant in the Colonial. Anyone know what it was called?
