Coolopolis Kwiz - sumthin' happenin' here, what is it ain't exactly clear...
This photo was taken exactly 35 years ago today...well if it were August 5 today it would have been 35 years ago. Who can spell out the five Ws of what's going on here. It should be guessable.
The Milton-Park Citizens Committee in downtown Montreal undertook the first major confrontation against 'urban renewal' and in effect stopped the destruction of a heritage neighbourhood and transform the area into the largest non-profit cooperative housing project in North America with some 1800 residents federated into 22 coops on the first land trust in Canada preventing any land speculation. This struggle went on until the community victory and the completion of massive renovations which were finished in 1983.
Excellent reply, right on. And a notable time it was indeed. However I'd argue that it wasn't entirely a community victory. Although the La Cite Concordia project was greatly scaled back from its original plans, a big chunk of that plot was demolished for the La Cite tower by self-proclaimed socialist developers. Nonetheless it was a huge turning point in the city's history.
