Of the top 30 goals scorers in NHL history, only five played on one team for their entire career. Three of those five were from Montreal (greater Montreal anyway).
Who were they?
Yes we have a few winners in the comments section.
They were:
- Mike Bossy from Laval,
- Rocket Richard from Ahuntsic
- Mario Lemieux from Ville Emard.
The other two, Stan Mikita and Steve Yzerman, are Ontario boys.

But you don't win the big prize until you answer part II of the question which should be easy in a town where everybody is obsessed with the Montreal Canadiens.
2-Which Montreal-born player, who also played most of his career here, reigned as all-time career NHL goal scoring leader for 15 years?
3-And there's a part III as well: this helmet, as worn by Lanny McDonald in the photo - was considered kinda goofy. Only one Hab - that we can remember anyway - ever opted to wear one of these and you probably will never guess who.
Answers!: Yes the wearer of the Winnwell helmet -albeit briefly - was a young Guy Lafleur.
Nobody has yet answered the other question about the 15 year reigning goal scorer. You're stumped admit it! HINT - He was the NHL's leading career goal scorer from 1937-1952. Winner! - BCer in Mtl nailed the final remaining question - Nels Stewart was indeed the NHL's all-time leading career goal scorer for quite some time. He played a lot of NHL games for the Montreal team at the time. That team was the Montreal Maroons, of course.
Rocket, Pocket Rocket and Le Gros Bill.
ReplyDeleteOh, Montreal as in the the town. I'd say The Rocket, Mike Bossy and Mario Lemieux.
ReplyDeleteMario Lemieux
ReplyDeleteMaurice Richard
Mike Bossy
Stan Mikita.
ReplyDeleteBobby Hull.
Wayne Gretzky.
Who cares.
ReplyDeleteNo one was more entertaining than Gump Worsley for us kids watching "Hockey Night in Canada" back in the '60s when the Gumper would be scored on and when the cameraman would do a close up of his face, you'd have to identify the swear word he was uttering.
part II : Guy Lafleur,
ReplyDeleteHow about a question as to which Hockey Hall of Famer reneged on his fiduciary responsibility as a Member of the Board of Directors, and while still living a life of luxury today, the clients of the firm he fronted for are now bereft of their living savings? Said firm was Mount Real...the morally reprehensible loser who wasn't man enough to stand up and give a quote to the Journal de Montreal when confronted being Mike Bossy.
ReplyDeletePart 3 : Funny helmet was also worn by Guy Lafleur! (I'm pretty sure Serge Savard wore it once as well!)
ReplyDeleteOh yeah! I'm pretty sure it was a Winwell helmet! Man it was fugly!!
ReplyDeleteI was sure Guy Lafleur was the same person you were looking for in part II and III... for a sec I figured it could be Morenz but he wasn't born in Montreal...
ReplyDeleteAnonymous:
ReplyDeleteCouldn't be Lafleur, he was from Thurso.
I suspect the answer might be someone from the early 1900's. back then they sometimes awarded the Cup twice a year, and many of the winners were Montreal teams.
But 15 yrs, that's quite a while.
About the helmet . . .Lafleur wore it for three seasons if I recall. After progressively disappointing seasons 71-72, 72-73 and 73-74 he shed the helmet and stepped up in 74-75, he would have won the scoring race but had a broken finger putting him out for a while.
About Part 2 - I'll take a stab at Nels Stewart. Born in Mtl, played 7 seasons for the Maroons, 8 for others (Bruins, NY Americans), so not "most" of his career. He retired after the 1939-40 season having netted 333 goals (324 regular season, 9 playoff). Richard passed 324 goals in 52-53 (or 333 including palyoffs in 50-51)
