Clothesline thieves threaten civilization

Eco-friendly-greeniacs know that the planet can be partially saved by clotheslines which require far less electricity than your dryer (time for somebody to invent an electric clothesline... Chimples). Back in the day in areas like Ville Emard they practically taught clothesline grabbing in elementary school, perhaps as a way to prevent kids from getting caught and tossed in prison for 3 to 17 years for the deed.
A few days ago a pair of Montrealers Pierre Gaucher and Richard Leclair brought their neighbours to civil court, accusing them of coming to their backyard and cutting the line and grabbing $1,500 worth of threads in the night of August 22, 2008. The police wouldn`t file a criminal complaint because there had been no eyewitnesses. The judge decided on March 25, 2010 that there was little evidence to suggest that accused Erwan Foucault actually stole the clothing, in fact the judge found him to be a very cooperative witness.
For the rest of us who havent yet had a piece of clothing lifted from our lines, we thank the demonic angel of clothesline protection (above) for watching over us.

  1. I used a clothesline religiously (first to start in spring, last to use in fall) in the Point for years and thankfully never lost a single piece of clothing. I sure wish I could have "thanked" the demonic angel of clothesline protection personally. :)

  3. I once had a clothesline on my balcony hanging over Everett Street in Villeray. I once dropped a sock and some thuggy kids on the sidewalk tried to throw it back up but it got stuck on the second storey balcony. The next day, my sock was hanging on my doorknob. God bless those friendly neighbours.

A few years ago, there was a TV piece on the only guy left who professionally installs outdoor clothes lines. It was in Mtl, I believe.

My neighbours were recently visited by a wailing fire truck because they were burning brush in their backyard, despite a burn ban, and despite their laundry hanging next to the copious smoke.
