Betty White cane to Montreal just weeks before the October crisis of 1970

Photo: Betty White, who is again in fashion as she's slated to host Saturday Night Live in five weeks, visited Montreal in August 1970, as pictured. What was the reason for her visit?

We have some bang-on answers! Betty White came to Montreal to tape the American TV show Beat the Clock, which was shot in our faire citye from 1970 to 1974 because it was cheaper. The original host Jack Narz (in the photo) lived in LA and eventually quit because his salary barely exceeded the cost of flying here for tapings and Goodson-Todman declined to fork out, he was thus replaced by Gene Wood. These excellent photos and several others were recently uploaded to facebook by TV historian Steve Hatton.

  2. To appear on "Beat The Clock" on Ch. 12. I remember the show. I was studying for a McGill exam while watching.

  4. The summer of 1970 I was 8 years old when my we went to the Ch.12 studio to see the taping of Beat the Clock. Betty white stood beside us against the wall as the show was being taped. She looked great as she does now. She was on as the next guest.
