They might be seen as lunatics, but guys like this, digging through the garbage at a Tim Horton's in Lasalle for a recyclable can of pop, might be going to heaven while you ...well it's not so sure.
I look at these guys the same way I look at vultures or maggots. I know but they may be providing a beneficial service but I am still disgusted by them.
Whenever I see pop cans (or their more precious counterparts, beer bottles) tossed on the street, I can't help but think of the glorious times when, in early 1990s, my cousins, my sister and I would rampage the beach of Rawdon collecting empty cans and bottles. My family just came to Canada and it was a great way to make a few hundred dollars. We were kids, we were shameless (and we stank beer)... and yes, the gutsier of us actually entered into the garbage cans on days like the St-Jean (thousands of people). Some people were actually giving us their bottles and we competed with eachother. I invested the proceeds (~300$). Today I work at Cirque du Soleil, my sister lives in California and I do not collect cans (but I am very tempted to... for the sake of ecology). And for the record, I don't/didn't look like the man pictured, even at my lowest. Also, I'm annoyed at the can collectors who pierce garbage bags in order to find their prized treasures. It makes the streets messy and the garbage men's job disgusting. Also2, a story on dumpster diving at Marche Jean Talon (for "not-so-fresh-but-still-eatable" produce)?
By the way, what's the goal of this blog? (I do find it and its Montreal-focus very interesting... just stumbled on it looking for a fact about D. Azrieli).

ReplyDeleteAnd I was just about to ask if you had any Lasalle stuff.
ReplyDeleteHe looks like Tobias from Arrested Development.
Tim Horton's is something Quebec never should've imported from Ontario. Dull decor and often bad service. I miss Dunkin' Donuts.
