Leonard Cohen slummin' it in Montreal

Raise a glass of blood to Lenny Cohen who is currently hanging around Montreal, or was seen yesterday at his haunt Bagels Etc near his majestically tiny home at St. Dump near the Portugal Square, according to Genny Em, eternal friend of Coolopolis. Vegas sez it's either to deal with a tenant or get some medicare stuff done.

No, I think he's under contract to make a certain number of appearances per year in Montreal, to generate Cohen buzz.

In the early nineties, I was walking up St. Lawrence Blvd on one of the first really nice days of spring. That bar at the corner of Marie-Anne had its windows open, and I casually look in. There's Leonard Cohen! And he must have realized I recognized him, since he nods in my direction. Leonard Cohen acknowledged my existence!

Later, I realize it was likely a defense mechanism. If he acknowledges me at a distance, I'm less likely to go over and say "Aren't you Leonard Cohen?" and all that. Nodding kept the distance, yet was easier than dealing with me if I went over.

It's actually a better story this way than the time in 1982 that I met Joan Baez backstage at Place des Arrs, because that was so staged I realized I had nothing to say to her, I was back there only because she was famous.

  2. I met Leonard in '69, on Sussex drive.
He bought a painting from me.
    My lucky day!

  3. I'd swear Joan B smiled at me from the stage in the late 60's. I was taking her picture.
I met Leonard in '69. and he bought a picture I'd made of him.
He left wet footprints on the floor, which I showed to mey friends.
